Hello HP Community,

I am facing an issue with my fingerprint sensor HP EliteBook 840 G6. It does not appear in Device Manager under “Biometric Devices,” and I also don’t see the fingerprint setup option in Windows Hello (Sign-in Options).

I have already tried:

  • Checking in services.msc, but the Windows Biometric Service is not showing.

  • Updating Windows and drivers.

  • Restarting my laptop.

Still, the fingerprint option is missing.

Can you please guide me on how to check if the fingerprint sensor is working properly or if it might be a hardware/driver issue?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello.

Are you certain you have a fingerprint reader? If your laptop was not configured with it, the fingerprint reader slot has a plastic insert. If your model came with a fingerprint option, the fingerprint reader is slightly recessed.

The fingerprint reader is enabled and disabled in BIOS settings. You can enter BIOS settings by tapping F10 key when the HP boot logo is shown on the screen. There are many other settings as well, do not modify anything else unless you know what you are doing.

When you start your laptop, you can also launch Diagnostics by tapping F2 when logo is shown, and in there test the fingerprint reader functionality under Component Tests.
