I bought a new mSATA ssd to use as a boot drive in my HP Envy 15 (2013) to speed it up a bit. I cloned the OS to the SSD and tried to change the boot order in the BIOS however there apears to be no way to set it to boot from the SSD. Removal of the HDD caused it to boot succsesfully from the SSD. This, and some research suggested if I clear the hard drive, and re-format it, I would be able to boot from the SSD automatically so I did just that. Now when I plug the HDD in I get a MSG saying Install OS on HDD. Is there anyway to make it boot from the SSD automatically, instead of getting stuck on the HDD?

Welcome back to HP Support Community.
The Notebook doesn't seem to recognize the SSD Hard drive as the Primary Drive even after changing the boot option
At this point I would request you to contact our phone support for further assistance
1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.
6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.
Thank you

I am responding on behalf of @KrazyToad as he is out for the day. It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.
Is there a choice called Windows Boot Manager in BIOS boot order, as that might help explain why it looks at HDD first. The way some new motherboards boot is to use WBM to keep a list of bootable devices that PC can boot from.
Also, check the below and check if it helps.
1. Boot with just the SSD installed.
2. Verify that the disc letter C was assigned to it.
3. Connect HDD
4. Assign some other letter to it.
Please let me know your region (Location) in a private message and I will send the tech support number.
Good day! Take care 🙂
Cheers!
