Hi @Huobis

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering a black screen with the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI prompt and it is asking for an administrator password, it typically means that the system is locked, and you're being prompted to enter the password for access to certain diagnostic features. If you don't know the password, there are a few methods you can try to resolve this issue. However, if you don't have the password, it might be difficult to proceed without taking additional steps.

Here’s what you can try:

1. Try Default or Common Passwords

Sometimes, users might have set a simple or default password. Some common ones you can try:

  • Blank (just press Enter with no characters).
  • Administrator (capital A or lowercase a).
  • 123456 or password (sometimes set by users for ease of access).

If none of these work, you’ll need to try other methods.

2. Reset the BIOS/UEFI Password (By Resetting CMOS)

If you're unable to enter the password, you may need to reset the BIOS/UEFI password by clearing the CMOS. This can be done by either removing the CMOS battery or using a jumper on the motherboard. Here’s how:

Method 1: Remove the CMOS Battery

  • Turn off the PC and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the case (this will vary depending on the model) and locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard. It's usually a small round silver coin-cell battery (like a CR2032).
  • Carefully remove the CMOS battery for about 5-10 minutes.
  • Reinsert the battery and plug the computer back in.
  • Turn the PC on again, and check if the BIOS/UEFI password has been cleared.

Method 2: Use the CMOS Jumper (If Available)

  • Some motherboards have a CMOS reset jumper that can be used to clear the BIOS password.
  • Locate the jumper (refer to your motherboard manual for the exact location), and move it from the default position to the reset position.
  • Leave it for a few seconds, then move it back to the default position.
  • Power on the PC and see if the password has been cleared.

3. Try HP’s Reset Tools

HP has a tool that might help with this, especially if you're dealing with an HP-branded laptop or desktop:

HP BIOS Password Reset Tool: Some HP devices come with an HP BIOS Password Reset Tool. You can visit HP’s official support website and search for your specific model to see if there’s an official way to reset the password.

HP Support: If you still can’t get past the BIOS password, you can contact HP Support. They may be able to assist with verifying ownership and providing a method to reset the password.

4. Use a Password Reset Tool (if applicable)

If your computer is not under warranty or you cannot access HP support, there are third-party software tools available that claim to help reset BIOS passwords. However, these tools often require booting from a USB stick and using specific methods that could potentially void your warranty or cause issues with the system if not used correctly.

5. Perform a System Reset or Recovery

If you are able to bypass the password (either by resetting the CMOS or using a password reset tool), you may want to perform a system recovery:

  • Boot into Windows Recovery: If your system has a recovery partition, you might be able to perform a system restore to get your system working again without requiring the password.
  • Factory Reset: If nothing works, consider performing a factory reset. This will restore the system to its original state, but it will erase all personal files and settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
