Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Sorry for your loss...

The HDMI port on your computer is "HDMI-Out".  It's designed to connect your PC to a big screen TV, etc.  It will not "see" the dvd.

You'll need a data-capable DVD reader to transfer the file to your PC.  Trying to "play" the video into it will not work.  Try to transfer it on another computer to an SD card.  Your PC has an SD card reader in it.  You can then transfer it to YouTube.

Hi, not very savvy, what would a "You'll need a data-capable DVD reader" be? Thanks

A "standalone" DVD player is designed to accept a DVD (or Blue-Ray) disc and output a video signal to a screen.  This is simply a video signal, not the bits and bytes that a computer needs.

You will need an external optical drive that can read/write DVD discs.  These normally will plug into a data port on a computer (USB, USB-C, etc.)   You cannot transfer files via HDMI cables.

I would try to locate a friend who has a DVD drive in their computer.  Insert the disc, and determine what format the file is.  Copy the file to a USB stick, if available, or simply upload it to YouTube from that computer!

If you choose to purchase, there are many for sale at amazon.com.  An example  DVD optical drive.
