Hi
This problem of mine has been bothering me lately as the laptop that my uncle gave me a few weeks ago has been acting strange. The problem is that I don't hear any fan spinning inside my laptop, and the fan also doesn't show in HWMonitor. The strange thing is that it also doesn't show that 90B code when booting up, but I also don't know if this particular model of the 15 dw1000 series even got any fan inside of it, but in the teardown videos of this laptop series I've seen is that it does have fan inside of it.
I want to know from a know from a knowledgeable person if this laptop does have a fan in it because I don't want to open it myself yet as it still has a week left of warranty of it, because it gets noticeably hot when only doing school works. And if it doesn't have any, I'll just buy a generic laptop table stand that has a fan on it for a meantime before I buy myself a new laptop.
Thank you.

Hi @SkyKal,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
I understand that you are having issues with the fan.
The HP 15-Dw1000 Laptop PC Series (7CZ29AV) should have an internal cooling fan as part of its thermal management system. The fan is essential for maintaining optimal operating temperatures and preventing overheating. Here are some steps to check if the fan is working properly:
1. Listen for the Fan
- Quiet Environment: Move to a quiet environment and listen closely to the laptop.
- Increase Load: Perform a resource-intensive task like running a game, a large software installation, or a system scan. The fan should become audible as the CPU and GPU generate more heat.
2. Check for Airflow
- Air Vents: Place your hand near the air vents on the sides or bottom of the laptop. You should feel a slight airflow when the laptop is running.
3. BIOS Diagnostics
- HP Hardware Diagnostics:
- Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to enter the System Diagnostics.
- Run the Component Tests and select Fan to check if the fan is operating correctly.
4. HP Support Assistant
- Run Diagnostics:
- Open the HP Support Assistant software.
- Navigate to the Diagnostics & Tools tab.
- Run the System Test to check the status of the cooling fan.
Kindly check the next set of steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi @SkyKal,
Check below the next set of steps.
5. Temperature Monitoring Software
- Install Software:
- Download and install temperature monitoring software like HWMonitor or SpeedFan.
- Monitor the internal temperatures. If the temperatures are unusually high and the fan is not running, there may be an issue.
6. Check BIOS Settings
- Fan Control Settings:
- Enter the BIOS setup by pressing Esc or F10 during startup.
- Look for any settings related to fan control and ensure they are set to automatic or enabled.
7. Physical Inspection
- Disassemble the Laptop (if comfortable):
- If you are comfortable opening the laptop and it is out of warranty, you can carefully remove the bottom panel to visually inspect the fan for dust buildup or damage.
- Ensure the fan connector is securely attached to the motherboard.
8. Professional Help
- HP Support:
- If you cannot hear the fan or feel airflow and the diagnostic tools indicate a problem, contact HP Support for further assistance.
- If your laptop is still under warranty, HP may provide repair or replacement options.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hey, uhm thanks to the response. I tested the one and two and there's definitely no air coming out of the vents and no sounds either. The third method is where I was confused because the fan option didn't appear nowhere. The fourth option is yet to be done as my router is very slow, so I'll respond to that later. I already did the fifth one and the fan doesn't show there neither. The sixth one is also strange as the bios didn't recognize any fans nor didn't show an option to control the fan, and again I don't get the 90B code everytime I boot the laptop up. My only hope here is either to open it myself, but I don't have the time yet as I'm busy.
But thanks either way for responding. I'll respond later if something happens. My warranty is already expired so I'll just open it myself, I guess.

New update:
I ran the HP Support Assistant method and it also didn't say anything about something like a fan failure or something. Strange…
Now I'm guessing there's just something stuck or preventing the fan to spin, or the cable is just loose.

Hey big news!
So I took apart the back cover of the laptop and found that there's no fan from the factory itself! I can say this because there's no socket or connector to where the fan should connect, and there's this big shielding around the motherboard and it doesn't have that copper tube that runs from the cpu to the exhaust of the fan, unlike the other laptops of this series where it does a copper tube and a fan with no shielding around the motherboard, and the cpu head where the contact of whatever cooling is just exposed. I don't know if you can see it or not, but it's exposed.
It's a bummer actually, because I usually use this for school and it gets noticeably hot just by using Netbeans.
I will probably just buy a cooling table for the meantime while waiting for a new laptop, or just swap out the fan and the connector from my old laptop to this one.
