Hi Riddle_Decipher,

It took some doing but I finally found the results under the system log. The log entry reported the volume is healthy.

Regarding the suggestion for system restore: That's not really going to be an option for me. Although System Restore is ON by default (thank you, HP!), the only restore point seems to be the one I set a few days ago when I started troubleshooting, and the condition already existed at that point.

Taking a closer look at the error log:

The manifest in question is something associated with the computer's AMD 64 processor.

Only 7 software updates are visible to me in the Control Panel. Two are for C++ redistributable packages -- the rest are updates for Windows, one of those being a security update for Adobe Flash. The other updates are for the following KB articles:

4013418

3176937

3176935

3193494

This resource (amd64_6d9812eb7bf4fa9028c2add67eb322a6_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.1066_none_8b50316b0c4fcaad) includes the version number 10.0.14393.1066, which appears to be associated with KB 4015217. Notice it is not listed among the installed updates above. Recall I reported current version as 10.0.14393.0.

Information on 4015217 here:

I have downloaded 4015217, created a restore point, and am about to install that update.

@undefined

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

If you are going to retry download, you may do it either online using the link you've shared or simply use the below direct download links:

The size of 32-bit and 64-bit versions are 561MB and 1.08GB respectively. Note that these updates are cumulative. Therefore, the packages contain all previously released fixes.

Download 32-bit

Download 64-bit

Keep me posted for further assistance 😉

Well, the update failed... due to (say it with me now) a corrupted component store.

I'll need to look at the error logs in greater detail, but I believe the error message I saw in the Setup log for this install was more direct than the one for the May update: "Windows update 'Security Update for Windows (KB4015217)' could not be installed because of error 2147956498 'The component store has been corrupted.' (Command line: ''C:\WINDOWS\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\users\{rest of path}.msu'' ')".

I notice that the power settings are set pretty aggressively on the PC -- the system is set to go to sleep in 10 minutes when plugged in. I'm beginning to wonder if going to low power/sleep while the installs are being attempted are affecting the installs, so I've modified the power settings to something less aggressive.

I'm finally seeing evidence in the Setup log that corruption DOES exist. Before, I was seeing log entries that stated that there was no corruption despite detection. Now I'm seeing these:

  • Event ID 1014: "System store corruption detection and repair has completed. Total instances of corruption found: 4. Total instances of corruption repaired: 0."
  • Event ID 1015: "0 of 4 instances of system store corruption have been repaired. Unrepaired corruptions may lead to failures in future system servicing."

Re-running DISM. /Scanhealth still reports no corruption detected.

Running /Restorehealth (which I expect will report 0/0), then will re-run sfc.

Thank you, The_Fossette.

DISM reported negative results. I'm going for the nuclear option and performing system restore.

I had misinterpreted previous direction and thought the intent was use of restore points; I'm on track now.
