HP Assistant sends me 36 updates and tells me to sign in. Why is my name displayed at the top of Assistant if I am not signed in already. I cannot update the updates because I am not given anywhere to sign in

I suggest that you completely uninstall HPSA and install the latest version found here. This may solve your problem. There have been some updates made to the app.
