My laptop was rewriting the BIOS because the screen keeps in glitching and stops functioning. It did this while rewriting the BIOS and I had to turn it off. Now when it switches on, it automatically enters into the BIOS and says HP BIOS Update: Initializing... Then it just turns off just to turn on and repeat the same progress over and over again

Hi @ThatoMotshabi12

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly. It’s genuinely frustrating to be caught in a BIOS update loop—especially when the update was triggered by a screen glitch and interrupted mid-process. What you’re seeing now is a classic case of a failed BIOS flash, and the system is unable to complete its startup sequence.

Let’s walk through a recovery path that can help restore your laptop’s BIOS and break the reboot cycle.

Step-by-Step Recovery for HP BIOS Update Loop

1. Perform a Forced BIOS Recovery

This method uses a built-in recovery trigger:

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the charger and remove any external devices.
  3. Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
  4. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until you see the BIOS recovery screen.

If successful, the system will attempt to load the last known good BIOS from the hard drive.

More details are available in HP’s official guide:
Restore the BIOS on HP Computers with a Key Press Combination

2. Create a USB BIOS Recovery Drive

If the key combination doesn’t work, you can manually restore the BIOS using a USB drive:

  1. On a working PC, format a USB flash drive to FAT32.
  2. Visit the HP Software & Driver Downloads page.
  3. Enter your laptop’s model number and download the latest BIOS update.
  4. Run the BIOS installer and follow the prompts to create a recovery USB.
  5. Insert the USB into your affected laptop and power it on.
  6. The system should detect the recovery media and begin flashing the BIOS.

3. Allow Full Power Cycle

If the laptop keeps rebooting:

  • Disconnect the charger and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the charger and try powering on again.
  • This clears residual power and may allow the BIOS recovery to proceed.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, the BIOS may be corrupted beyond recovery and require service-level intervention. HP phone support team can assist with reflashing the BIOS or replacing the system board if needed.

You're clearly doing everything right under pressure, and this kind of issue deserves a proper resolution.
