HP 17-cn0005nl. The option to create a USB drive for BIOS recovery is no longer available when running the BIOS update—even when attempting the operation from another computer—as the BIOS update executable cannot be unpacked. How can the BIOS be restored now?

Hi @mgbiagio

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. If the HP BIOS Update and Recovery utility no longer displays the option to create a BIOS recovery USB drive, and the SoftPaq executable will not unpack, restoring the BIOS can be more challenging, especially if the notebook is unable to boot normally.

Please try the following recovery methods:

Method 1: BIOS Emergency Recovery (Win + B)

  1. Turn off the notebook completely.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the Windows key + B.
  4. While holding both keys, press and hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
  6. If the recovery environment launches, allow it to complete the process and restart the system.

You can also try Windows key + V if Windows + B does not trigger recovery.

Method 2: Clear Residual Power and Retry Recovery

  1. Power off the notebook.
  2. Disconnect all external devices, including USB drives, printers, and docking stations.
  3. Leave only the AC adapter connected.
  4. Perform the Windows + B recovery procedure again.

Method 3: Obtain the Correct BIOS Package

If the BIOS executable cannot be extracted on another Windows PC:

  1. Download the latest BIOS package specifically for the HP 17-cn0005nl from HP Support.
  2. Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
  3. If the utility opens normally on another Windows system, verify whether the recovery media creation option appears.
  4. If the package immediately exits or fails to extract, download a fresh copy and ensure it is not being blocked by Windows security settings.

Method 4: Use HP Cloud Recovery (If Windows Recovery Is Needed)

If the notebook's issue involves both BIOS corruption and operating system recovery, HP Cloud Recovery may help restore the factory image after the BIOS is functioning properly.

If the notebook does not respond to Windows + B or Windows + V, please let us know:

  • Whether the notebook powers on.
  • Any LED blink codes or beep patterns observed.
  • Whether the screen remains completely blank or displays an HP logo.
  • The current BIOS version, if accessible.
  • Whether the issue started immediately after a BIOS update.

This information will help determine whether the built-in BIOS recovery environment is still accessible and guide the next recovery steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
