Hi team,

I want to create a BIOS recovery drive on my pen-drive, and for that, I downloaded the BIOS (sp51636.exe) from HP Support website and run it on another PC to flash it onto the drive. Here's the guide : https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3894564-1633733-16

Quite unexpectedly, when executed the sp51636.exe file,
it is extracted to C:\SwSetup\SP51636 folder and trying to install the BIOS update into the current system which I do not need it as I wanted it for another laptop and wanted to create bootable flash drive. The HP BIOS update and Recovery wizard not appearing to create a  bootable flash drive. Can someone help what needs to be done here?

Hi @Bibhu1904,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this issue by performing the necessary troubleshooting steps.

If the HP BIOS Update and Recovery Wizard is asking for another PC, it typically means it needs a working computer to create the recovery USB drive. However, there are a few alternative methods you can try using just your current HP Pavilion DV4 laptop:

HP Recovery Manager:

  • Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the F11 key until the Recovery Manager opens.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to create a recovery USB drive.

HP Support Website:

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
  • Enter your laptop model (HP Pavilion DV4) and select your operating system.
  • Look for the option to download a recovery tool or recovery image.
  • Follow the instructions to download and create a recovery USB drive.

Windows 10 Recovery Drive (if your laptop is running Windows 10):

  • Connect a USB drive to your laptop.
  • In the search box on the taskbar, type Create a recovery drive and select it from the list.
  • When the tool opens, ensure the option Back up system files to the recovery drive is checked, then click Next.
  • Select the USB drive and click Next, then Create.

Third-Party Tools:

  • You can use third-party tools like Rufus to create a bootable USB drive from an ISO image of Windows or a recovery image.
  • Download Rufus from here.
  • Obtain a Windows ISO from the Microsoft Download Center.
  • Open Rufus, select the USB drive, and choose the ISO file to create a bootable drive.

If none of the above methods work, contact HP Support for assistance. They may be able to provide you with alternate options.

For that to happen, we will give you additional instructions/information via Private Message.

Hi @Elohi_NR

Thank you for your reply.

I tried pressing F11 key after power on my corrupted laptop, nothing comes up.

I strongly believe that my BIOS software is corrupted and is the reason nothing comes up on the screen preassing F11, esc, F2 keys.

I was following the hp site: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_3932413-2337994-16

Section Recover the BIOS using a USB recovery drive

Step no 10 is something not appearing in my case as the BIOS software is trying to install to on another laptop which I am using to create/download  a recovery USB flash drive.

FYI - I am having two laptops of similar model HP dv4 notebook (one corrupted and other one is working OK)

On the working HP dv4 notebook, while executing the BIOS recovery software (sp51636.exe), it is trying to install on the same working HP dv4 notebook. (the BIOS software on the working HP dv4 notebook laptop is older than the downloaded one)

I was expecting below steps

Would you be able to help me creating a HP BIOS recovery USB flash drive

Thanks in Advance.
