Chrome OS

Hello there, I know that doing this is not officially supported, hopefully someone may be able to help me anyways. I was wondering if It was possible to install the ChromeOS alternative known as FydeOS on my chromebook. I am aware that this has the potential to brick my device. I am running the MrChromebox.tech firmware on my chromebook and whenever I press Control+L on the boot screen and select Alternate USB Boot with my FydeOS usb that I know works plugged in, it just says  error: file /boot/vmlinuz not found. Press any key to continue. I am stumped on this, I know many other users have reported success on FydeOS forums, Reddit, etc.

Anything helps.

@19pebbles12, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out here—glad to see you're diving deep into customization! You're right that installing FydeOS on a Chromebook isn’t officially supported by HP, and it does carry the risk of bricking, but I’ll try to help as much as I can.

It’s promising that you got past the initial vmlinuz error. Now that you’re seeing a blank backlit screen, it sounds like the boot process starts but fails to initialize graphics or load the OS UI.

A few things to check:

Have you verified that the FydeOS image you're using is for x86_64 and not ARM?

Did you disable write protection and update to the latest UEFI firmware via MrChromebox’s utility?

When flashing the USB, which tool did you use—Balena Etcher, Rufus, or something else? Some tools can misconfigure boot sectors.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
