I am using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows 2.7.2.0. There is a button to launch HP Image Assistant. When you click it, HP Image Assistant 5.3.1 is launched, which reports the availability of a new version 5.3.2 and offers to download it. I downloaded and launched hp-hpia-5.3.2.exe, but it was installed in the folder C:\SWSetup\sp158107, and when you click the "Run HP Image Assistant" button in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows utility, HP Image Assistant 5.3.1 is still launched. After copying all the files from C:\SWSetup\sp158107 to C:\Program Files\HP\HpHwDiag\HPDIAGS\HpiaTest with replacement, I check the version C:\Program Files\HP\HpHwDiag\HPDIAGS\HpiaTest\HPImageAssistant.exe, it shows 5.3.2. But when I click the "Run HP Image Assistant" button in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows utility, HP Image Assistant 5.3.1 still starts. I check the version C:\Program Files\HP\HpHwDiag\HPDIAGS\HpiaTest\HPImageAssistant.exe again, and it shows 5.3.1 again.

Hi @Ce3apyc

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

Thanks for explaining everything so clearly — that’s a very thorough breakdown, and I can imagine how frustrating it must be to see the older version persist despite your efforts.

Here’s a step-by-step approach that should help resolve this:

🛠️ Steps to Ensure HP Diagnostics Launches the Correct HPIA Version

  1. Uninstall the Old Version Completely

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
    • Uninstall HP Image Assistant 5.3.1 if it appears there.
    • Also check for any leftover folders in:
      • C:\Program Files\HP\HpHwDiag\HPDIAGS\HpiaTest
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\... (if applicable)
  2. Clean the Launch Path

    • Delete or rename the HpiaTest folder to prevent fallback to cached binaries.
    • This ensures HP Diagnostics doesn’t revert to the old executable.
  3. Reinstall HPIA 5.3.2 to the Expected Path

    • Re-run the hp-hpia-5.3.2.exe installer.
    • When prompted, manually set the install path to:
      C:\Program Files\HP\HpHwDiag\HPDIAGS\HpiaTest
    • Run the installer as administrator to ensure proper file replacement.
  4. Verify the Executable

    • After installation, right-click HPImageAssistant.exe in the HpiaTest folder → Properties > Details → confirm version is 5.3.2.
  5. Launch from HP Diagnostics

    • Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows.
    • Click “Run HP Image Assistant” and confirm it now launches the updated version.

💡 Optional: Shortcut Override

If the Diagnostics tool still launches the wrong version:

  • Create a shortcut to HPImageAssistant.exe (5.3.2) on your desktop or taskbar.
  • Use that directly instead of launching from within Diagnostics.

Let me know how it goes — and if it still misbehaves, I’ll help you dig deeper into registry paths or launcher configs. You're doing everything right so far!
