Hi @PhilActual

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

If you have forgotten your password or cannot access an encrypted drive, your sources outline several options depending on where the encryption or lock is enforced:

BitLocker Recovery Key

If your drive is protected by BitLocker encryption, you can unlock it using your recovery key:

  • Microsoft Account: Log into your Microsoft account on a separate device to check if your BitLocker recovery key was automatically saved to your cloud account.
  • Printed / Saved Copies: Look for any printed copies or document backups where you might have stored the recovery key.
  • Organization IT Department: If this is a work or school device, contact your organization's IT department to request the recovery key.

Windows Password Reset

If the issue is a forgotten Windows user account password:

  • Password Reset Disk: Insert a password reset disk if you created one prior to losing access.
  • Microsoft Account Online Reset: Reset your Microsoft account password using another device and use the new password to log in.
  • Security Questions: For local accounts on Windows 10, click "I forgot my password" on the sign-in screen to reset it by answering your security questions.

BIOS Drive Lock

If the drive is locked at the hardware level in the system settings:

  • Restart your computer and press F2, F10, or Del during startup to enter BIOS setup.
  • Check under Security, Hard Drive Lock, or Password menus to see if lock settings can be configured or removed.
  • If the BIOS password itself is unknown, you may need to reset the CMOS or consult HP support.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!
