HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-da0000 (903S6AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP Envy 17-Da0500 Windows 11 24H2 keeps going back to the login screen after around 60 seconds, if no activity has taken place. However, its really annoying when try to read a document & the screen returns to login.  I have updated the BIOS & checked all other related system drivers. The Power options now set to NEVER on Plugged in but it doesn’t make a difference. I hope someone can give some advise. I have tried all possible routes to resolve this without success.

Hi @Una17

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where your HP Envy 17-Da0500 laptop is automatically returning to the login screen after 60 seconds of inactivity, despite your efforts to adjust the power settings. This can be pretty frustrating, especially when you're trying to work or read documents.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Check Screen Saver Settings

Sometimes, screen savers can cause the system to return to the login screen:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize.
  • Click on Lock screen and scroll down to Screen saver settings.
  • Ensure the screen saver is set to None. If it's set to something else, try changing it to None to rule out any screen saver causing the issue.

2. Check for Sleep or Timeout Settings

Even though you've set the power options to Never for plugged-in devices, it's worth double-checking other related settings:

  • Open Power & Sleep Settings: Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  • Under Screen and Sleep, ensure that both screen and sleep settings are set to Never when plugged in.
  • Additionally, click on Additional power settings (on the right side) and make sure the settings under your selected plan are configured for Never on both screen and sleep.

3. Check Windows Lock Screen Timeout Settings

Windows 11 has its own timeout settings for locking the screen. To adjust it:

  • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter (Note: Group Policy Editor may not be available on Home editions).
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.
  • Look for the Interactive logon: Machine inactivity limit policy.
  • If this is set to a low value (like 1 minute or 60 seconds), double-click on it and change the value to a higher number or set it to 0 to disable the timeout entirely.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you so much. The first option in your help notes, identified the problem. In the Lock screen saver it was saved to NONE but In the next Tick box "On resume, display the login screen" I Unticked this box & hey presto, The screen does not time out. I also have access to the full features on how long I want the screen on when plugged in & on Battery.  Your help has saved me another few hours of trying to solve this puzzle.

Kind Regards
