Hi @binghamca,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy X360 is experiencing an issue where the screen goes black when plugged in. Since you've already checked the power settings and updated the drivers, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try

1. Check for Overheating

Sometimes, when laptops are plugged in and charging, they generate more heat. If the laptop is overheating, it could cause the screen to go black. Make sure the laptop has good airflow and isn't overheating.

  • Try using the laptop on a hard, flat surface to prevent overheating.
  • Clean the vents to ensure good airflow.

2. Disable Adaptive Brightness

Adaptive brightness can sometimes cause display issues. Here's how to disable it:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display.
  2. Under Brightness and Color, click on Advanced display settings.
  3. Turn off Change brightness automatically when lighting changes if it's enabled.

3. Update the Graphics Driver

Even though you've updated drivers, there could be a specific update needed for the graphics adapter.

  1. Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager).
  2. Expand Display Adapters, right-click your display adapter, and choose Update Driver.
  3. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.

4. Check for BIOS/UEFI Update

A BIOS update may fix power-related issues. Here's how to check:

  1. Go to the HP support website and enter your laptop's model number.
  2. Check for any available BIOS updates for your system and follow the instructions to update.

5. Power Plan Settings

Even if you've already checked your power settings, try adjusting the settings related to display and power management:

  1. Right-click the battery icon in the system tray and select Power Options.
  2. Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
  3. Then, click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand the Display section, and make sure the Turn off display option is set to Never for both battery and plugged-in modes.

6. Try a Different Power Adapter

There could be an issue with the current power adapter or charging port that is causing the black screen. Try using a different charger if available.

7. Perform a Hard Reset

To eliminate any potential hardware or software conflicts, perform a hard reset:

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Disconnect the charger and any peripherals.
  3. Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger and power on the laptop.

8. Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes, a pending Windows update may be the root cause of the issue. Go to Settings > Windows Update and ensure all updates are installed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
