HP 840 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I couldn't get this driver to install on my laptop, an HP 840 G3

I'm thinking, it would be good if the HP Image Assistant indicated how the update doesn't install, because your hardware is outdated.

Here's how I figured out that it's because the chip on my laptop is 6th generation, and this update only works, starting on 12th generation.

2. Use the Program and Features menu in the Control Panel to uninstall the fingerprint reader driver on the system.

There is nothing to de-install in Programs. I just see something in Device Manager. Do in this order:

Device Manager / Biometric devices / Synaptics FP Sensors, 06/27/18, Driver Version 4.5.351.0
. . . Uninstall Device / NO RESTART, JUST THEN INSTALL SP139889
. . . RE-RUN HP IMAGE ASSISTANT AND . . . IT'S STILL NOT INSTALLED, AND IT SEES A NEWER VERSION OF FINGERPRINT
. . . Synaptics (Validity) Fingerprint Sensor Driver, sp96234.exe, 07/24/18, 4.5.701.0 Rev.A

disable it first / restart
de-install it / restart . . . it re-installs the software, and enables it too, so
disable it / de-install it / no restart
. . . nothing

Programs and Features / What about de-installing Synaptics Pointing Device Driver? . . . NO, THAT'S THE MOUSE

For the BIOS, it says to unplug all peripherals before updating . . . so, I unplugged the 2ndry monitor

This didn't help, but, I see that unplugging the monitor cleared up how it was saying that my BIOS had not been updated on the HP web page

3. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to unpack the files to C:\SWSETUP\SP139889 or another directory of your choice.

4. Run the setup program from the directory that contains the unpacked files. Enter -? on the command line to list the options for the setup program.

disable / deinstall / run setup from the folder of the unpacked files
. . . use Enter -? on the command line to see options . . . unable to do this
. . . Install.cmd . . . Run as Admin / Restart / . . . no change

THE DOS WINDOW POPS UP, BUT JUST DISAPPEARS, IT DOES NOT LOOK HOW IT NORMALLY DOES, AFTER YOU DO AN INSTALL

NOTE: After double-clicking the downloaded file, select This program installed correctly on the Program Compatibility Assistant screen.
This message is displayed by the protection mechanism of Microsoft Windows.

Program Compatibility Assistant does not pop up.

What if I repeat the above, but before installing SP139889 . . . Properties / Compatibility / Install it for Win 8 . . . no change
