Hi guys,
I hope you can help me, I've been trying to find a solution for days now...
The problem started when I could no longer change the brightness of my screen. The function keys didn't show the brightness value and they had no effect on the brightness of the screen (the other function keys worked perfectly). And neither the Night mode had an effect on the brightness of the screen. I then tried a number of things that were recommended and now the entire keyboard no longer responds.
I'm not sure what happened. Right now:
- The Touch pad still works
- The keyboard does work in the BIOS - so no hardware issue
- In Safe mode, the keyboard doesn't work
- I deleted the driver for the keyboard in Device Manager and even after restarting, Windows didn't install a new one. This is why I think it is simply not recognizing the internal keyboard.
I have tried a lot, including a reset, but no effects on the internal keyboard or the brightness.
It's quite specific when it works and when it doesn't.
If you have an idea about the issue and the solution, please let me know.
Thank you,
Sebastiaan

Hi @Sebastiaanjp,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand that you are having issues with the keyboard.
Since the keyboard on your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15-dk1027la works in BIOS but doesn't function in Windows, it suggests a software or driver issue rather than a hardware malfunction. Here are steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
1. Check Device Manager Again
It seems Windows may not be automatically reinstalling the driver after you deleted it from Device Manager. Here's how to ensure the driver gets installed:
- Open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
- Expand the Keyboards section.
- If the internal keyboard driver is missing, click Action in the top menu and select Scan for hardware changes.
- If it still doesn’t appear, manually reinstall the driver:
- Right-click on the Keyboards section.
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
2. Install the HP Keyboard Driver
It’s possible that the generic Windows driver isn’t functioning properly, and the specific HP keyboard driver is required.
- Go to the HP Support page for your specific laptop model (HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15-dk1027la).
- Download and install the latest keyboard driver (if available), as well as any chipset drivers that may affect keyboard recognition.
3. Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics Tool
HP provides a built-in diagnostic tool to test for hardware or driver issues:
- Restart the laptop and press F2 during boot to open HP Diagnostics.
- Run a Keyboard test to verify if there are any underlying issues.
If the test passes but the keyboard doesn't work in Windows, this points to a software problem.
4. Check for BIOS Update
Since the keyboard works in BIOS, updating your BIOS may resolve the issue:
- Visit the HP Support page for your laptop model.
- Download the latest BIOS update and follow the instructions to install it.
5. Disable Filter Keys
Filter Keys can affect how Windows recognizes your keystrokes:
- Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
- Ensure that Filter Keys is turned off.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Sebastiaanjp,
Please find the remaining steps below.
6. Check HID Devices in Device Manager
Sometimes the keyboard might be listed as a Human Interface Device (HID) in Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices (HID).
- Look for any HID-compliant device entries related to the keyboard. Right-click and uninstall them.
- After uninstalling, restart the system to force Windows to reinstall the drivers.
7. Update Windows
A Windows update might fix driver issues:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Check for updates and install any pending updates.
8. Perform a Clean Boot
If the keyboard works in the BIOS and not in Windows (even in Safe Mode), a software conflict may be preventing it from functioning properly:
- Press Windows + R and type msconfig, then press Enter.
- In the Services tab, check the box for Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
- In the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager, and disable all startup items.
- Restart your computer and check if the keyboard works.
- If it works, re-enable services and startup programs one by one to identify the conflicting software.
9. Use System Restore
If the keyboard worked previously but has stopped after a specific change or update, you can use System Restore:
- Press Windows + R and type rstrui to open System Restore.
- Follow the prompts to restore your system to a date when the keyboard was functioning.
10. Reinstall Windows (Last Resort)
Since you've already performed a reset, reinstalling Windows may be the final step. This will reinstall the entire operating system and all drivers:
- Back up any important data.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery and choose the option to Reset this PC and perform a clean install.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Dear Elohi,
Thank you for your elaborate plan of steps. Unfortunately nothing helped so far. The only thing I haven't done yet is reinstall Windows.
Unless there is something else I can try, I'll probably need to do that... It's so weird to see the keyboard work perfectly fine in the boot menu etc... once the laptop starts up, the keyboard is dead...
