OMEN Laptop - 15-ek0010la
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello, I'm Samuel, I need help with my computer.

It's having very drastic temperature swings on the CPU, at rest while it's plugged into the power it can vary from 40 degrees to 98, then drop to 50. I made complete thermal paste changes. The GPU maintains correct levels but the problem is only the CPU. I did performance tests on the CPU and it showed that it remained between 98 and 95 degrees, but the air output was almost cold.

Hi @Samuel_Luna,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re dealing with some serious thermal issues on your HP Omen 15. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the temperature swings with your CPU:

Step 1: Check Cooling System

  • Fans: Ensure that all fans are functioning properly. If any fans are not spinning or are obstructed by dust, it can lead to overheating.
  • Dust Buildup: Open the laptop and clean out any dust or debris from the vents and heatsinks. Use compressed air to carefully blow out dust.

Step 2: Monitor CPU Usage

  • Task Manager: Check the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see if any processes are using excessive CPU resources, which could cause overheating.
  • Background Processes: Look for any unnecessary background processes that may be running and consuming CPU power.

Step 3: Adjust Power Settings

  1. Open Power Options: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
  2. Select Power Plan: Choose a balanced or power-saving plan rather than high performance.
  3. Change Advanced Settings: Under "Processor power management," set the maximum processor state to 99% to prevent the CPU from hitting its maximum frequency.

Step 4: Update Drivers and BIOS

  • Drivers: Ensure that your graphics and chipset drivers are up to date. You can download the latest versions from the HP website.
  • BIOS Update: Check for any available BIOS updates that may address thermal management issues.

Step 5: Check Thermal Throttling

  • Thermal Throttling: Use a program like HWMonitor or ThrottleStop to monitor your CPU temperatures and see if thermal throttling is occurring.
  • Undervolting: If you’re comfortable, consider undervolting the CPU using ThrottleStop. This can help reduce temperatures by lowering voltage.

Step 6: Verify Thermal Paste Application

  • Reapply Thermal Paste: Since you mentioned reapplying thermal paste, ensure that it was applied correctly. Use a thin, even layer and make sure it’s compatible with both the CPU and heatsink.

Step 7: Test in a Different Environment

  • Room Temperature: Test the laptop in a cooler environment to see if ambient temperature affects performance.
  • Surface: Make sure you’re using the laptop on a hard, flat surface to allow proper airflow.

Step 8: Consider External Cooling Solutions

  • Cooling Pad: Using a laptop cooling pad can help improve airflow and keep temperatures down.

Step 9: Hardware Issues

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I ran into problems when I tried to update the BIOS, it won't let me do it from HP Support, and the version I have is one from the launch of the device. On the other hand, by lowering the percentage of battery consumption of the processor, the temperatures instantly drop. The problem is that I feel a lot of difference in performance in some games. Considering that this did not happen to me before, I would like to solve it.
