OK - It appears that you're giving up; I suppose I must too.  I've copied our previous dialogue and your instructions for contacting HP Support for future use when I have time to further pursue this problem.  However, I suspect all I'll get from them will be the usual "start all over from scratch, reinstall Windows 10, and reinstall and configure all your application software" solution, which I simply cannot afford to do.  Meanwhile, the computer works fine in all other respects, and is in heavy daily use.

 

Anyway, thanx for trying.  I suppose you may close this thread now...

I still recommend you contact support as they will be able to take remote of your computer and check what exactly is happening. If you ask you to reinstall the operating system then you can deny them.
