HP Omen 17 w200no
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So, I recently decided to buy this HP Omen gaming laptop and mainly for gaming. It has intels i5 7300HQ Quadcore processor and Nvidia's Geforce GTX 1060 graphics card. Games work very well with them, as I expected.  However, I noticed some problems that I really want to know more about and POSSIBLY fix them. The main performance issue I noticed was that my FPS (Frames per second) in games is reduced greatly if I don't have my charger plugged in, and instead play with battery power. The difference between these two is HUGE and I have tried several ways to make my experience better for example by changing power usage method(s) in Nvidia control panel and windows settings but those seemed to have no effect on the performance. I have been thinking to just keep my laptop always plugged in when I am not going anywhere for a while but that makes me think of another problem. What could happen to the battery? I have read about things like how to improve battery life and one method could be by removing the battery and just let the laptop run with AC power. Unfortunately that is not an option for me because this laptop has pre-installed battery. What should I do? Should I keep the laptop always plugged in while gaming at the risk of ruining the battery one day or just play games which the battery power can handle? I appreciate any help for improving the performance in any way.

@Thomass18

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the laptop performance drops when the adapter is disconnected from the wall outlet,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Have you attempted to update the BIOS, Chip-set and video card drivers?

If you haven't, Click here to find and install the same.

Once done, follow the below steps:

Right-click your desktop background and select NVIDIA Control Panel. You can also find this tool by performing a Start menu (or Start screen) search for NVIDIA Control Panel or by right-clicking the NVIDIA icon in your system tray and selecting Open NVIDIA Control Panel.

To quickly set a system-wide preference, you could use the Adjust image settings with the preview option. For example, if you have old hardware that struggles to play the games you want to play, you may want to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate.

By default, the “Use the advanced 3D image settings” option is selected. You can select Manage 3D settings and change advanced settings for all programs on your computer or just for specific games. NVIDIA keeps a database of the optimal settings for various games, but you’re free to tweak individual settings here. Just mouse-over an option for an explanation of what it does.

If you have a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology — that is, both NVIDIA and Intel graphics — this is the same place you can choose which applications will use the NVIDIA hardware and which will use the Intel hardware.

Let me know how that pans out

Hello!

Sorry that I come back to you so late but I'd like to inform that your tips did help me in someways. However the tips you gave me didn't fix the whole problem. The in-game FPS is still much different when using battery life for example, but the fix improved the situation a little bit. I have question that is important in this case which I have been thinking. Is it safe to keep my computer plugged in always while gaming or what should I do? If you find any other ways to improve my experience I am more than happy to try. Also my drivers are up-to-date and I did the BIOS update which helped in someways too. Can it be that I have for example a Intel graphics card driver that prevents my computer from using the Nvidias driver while on battery power? If you come up with some more conclusions that could help me just let me know.

Greetings @Thomass18, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, it is completely safe to have the computer connected to the power outlet the whole time. Click here to know about the "terminate charge bit" when you read the section under "How does the notebook charge the battery?".

You second concern that Intel kicks in when the computer is not connected to the power adapter. You are right, all computers that go with switchable graphics help reduce the power consumption by switching off the graphics card that consumes more power. So while gaming, please do have the power adapter connected to your computer and the wall outlet. Click here

Let me know if this helped.

So you are basically saying that there is no way to not game properly without plugging your laptop in??? Because that is going to wear down the battery a lot and I don’t want to do that. And normally when I first got my computer there was a bar that appeared when I click the battery to choose gaming performance or power savor. Now it is no longer there???
