I've been experiencing keyboard issues with my HP OmniBook X Flip since the day I purchased it. Initially, the 7 and 8 keys would intermittently stick or fail to register when pressed. Over time, those keys improved, but now the W key has the same problem. Sometimes it works normally, but other times I have to press it multiple times before it registers.

I've updated Windows, restarted the laptop, and checked for software updates, but the issue continues. Since the problem has affected different keys over time, it seems like it may be a hardware issue rather than a software or driver problem.

I contacted HP Support while the laptop was still under warranty. They offered to repair it if I mailed the laptop in. While I appreciate the support, this is my primary work laptop, and I simply can't be without it for several days or weeks because I rely on it every day for my job.

I'm disappointed because this is marketed as a premium laptop, and I expected the keyboard to be reliable from day one. Aside from the keyboard, the laptop has been excellent—the display, performance, battery life, and overall design are all great.

Has anyone else experienced similar keyboard issues with the HP OmniBook X Flip? Were you able to resolve the problem without sending the laptop in for repair? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi  @Vikramlal,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern on how this must be, especially when this is your primary work laptop and you've been experiencing keyboard issues since day one. I'm glad to hear that you've otherwise been enjoying the display, performance, battery life, and overall design of your HP OmniBook X Flip, don’t worry let me help you with this keyboard issue.

To better understand the issue and help narrow down the cause, could you kindly confirm the below details :

  • What is the complete model number of your HP OmniBook X Flip? (Link for steps on how to find the model number - click here )
  • Does the issue occur only with the built-in keyboard, or have you tested with an external USB/Bluetooth keyboard?
  • When the affected keys fail to register, do they work normally in the BIOS menu or HP PC Hardware Diagnostics?
  • Are there any signs of physical sticking, unusual key travel, for the affected keys?
  • Does the issue occur across all applications (Notepad, browser, Microsoft Word, etc.), or only in specific programs?

In the meantime, I would recommend trying the below steps and confirm :

  1. Run an HP Hardware Keyboard Test (Link for steps on how to perform the UEFI test - Click here )
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Power it on and repeatedly tap Esc.
    • Select F2 - System Diagnostics.
    • Run the Keyboard Test and note whether any keys fail during the test.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset (Link for steps on how to perform the Hard Reset - Click here )
    • Shut down the notebook.
    • Disconnect all external devices.
    • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    • Restart the system and test the keyboard again.
  3. Check Device Manager
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Expand Keyboards.
    • Right-click the keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
    • Restart the laptop and allow Windows to automatically reinstall the driver.

Since you've mentioned that different keys have been affected over time (initially 7 and 8, and now W), and the symptom has persisted despite Windows updates, it would be helpful to determine whether the behaviour is present outside of Windows. If the same issue occurs during the HP Diagnostics keyboard tests, that would indicate a hardware-related concern.

I hope this helps.
