I’m using an HP Pavilion (Windows 10/11). My touchpad is not working and “Mice and other pointing devices” does not appear in Device Manager.

Under Human Interface Devices, I see “I2C HID Device” with a yellow warning icon. This happened after a Windows update / OS reinstall.

What I tried:

  • Enabled Show hidden devices

  • Checked BIOS (touchpad enabled)

  • Touchpad toggle keys (Fn + F*)

  • USB mouse works

  • Touchpad still not detected

Looking for:
Correct driver order / fix for HP Pavilion I2C touchpad issue.

Hi @Nis59,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This is a common issue on HP Pavilion laptops after Windows updates or OS reinstalls, especially when the I2C HID Device shows a yellow warning icon. It means the touchpad driver stack is broken or missing. Here’s the correct recommended fix and driver installation order:

Why It Happens

  • Windows Update sometimes replaces HP’s Synaptics/ELAN I2C driver with a generic HID driver.
  • The yellow warning on the I2C HID Device indicates the touchpad cannot initialize because the Intel Serial IO/chipset drivers are missing or out of order.

Correct Driver Installation Order

  1. Intel Chipset Driver
    • Install the latest chipset driver for your Pavilion model from HP Support.
  2. Intel Serial IO Driver
    • This is critical for I2C devices (touchpad).
  3. Synaptics or ELAN Precision Touchpad Driver
    • Download from HP’s driver page for your exact model.
  4. HP Firmware / BIOS Update
    • Ensure BIOS is up to date for proper hardware initialization.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Uninstall Broken HID Device
    • In Device Manager → Human Interface Devices → Right-click I2C HID Device → Uninstall (check “Delete driver software” if available).

  2. Restart the Laptop
    • Let Windows reload basic drivers.

  3. Install Drivers in Correct Order
    • Chipset → Serial IO → Touchpad → Restart after each.

  4. Enable Touchpad in BIOS
    • Press Esc → F10 at boot → System Configuration → Touchpad → Enabled.

  5. Run HP Support Assistant
    • It can auto-detect missing drivers.
