HP Programmable Key program "please make sure hotkey service is running"

I get the exact same error message when starting the HP Programmable Key app as on this post: HP Programmable Key - HP Support Community - 9102509

I checked services.msc and couldn't find any HP hotkey process. I even pressed the export list button, and opened the .txt file using notepad. I then searched for "hotkey" (case insensitive, without quotes), and no results.

My laptop is not an old model. It's from 2024 I believe?

I meant to select Windows 11, but I assumed it was defaulted to that, and only saw it after posting.

I also selected the product this applies to, but it seems to have been ignored as I don't see it in the post?

Hi @Wallby 

If your laptop is the 16-ab1002nc model, it does not support that program. That program is designed for business-class laptops, as it requires the HP Hotkey UWP Service to be installed in order to work.

Are you saying that a €2000,- laptop has a key that simply cannot be programmed? Even though when I press it the system has a custom handler that opens a popup where you can choose whether to open the HP app or the Omen gaming hub app? That seems quite odd.

Unfortunately, that's how it is—it's already programmed that way, but you can't use that program; it's intended for the business line.

I've seen posts from users of other laptop models with that key, and none of them can get that program to work
