Hello! My default speaker sound drivers (Realtek(R) Audio) constantly begin to crackle spontaneously. I have tried uninstalling the driver, reinstalling the driver, I've tried restarting my laptop and I've even contacted the Windows 1 on 1 support and even they weren't able to solve my issue (The HP Virtual Assistant didn't manage to do anything either). I'm sure this is a driver issue because when I switch from my default audio driver to another driver and then back to my default driver, the audio crackling will solve itself temporarily

Please I can't stand this anymore can anyone help me or point me to where I can contact a real human support instead of the virtual assistant

You are Welcome, @PennyIsSilly

Got it 👍 Thanks for the detailed update, Penny!

Glad to hear the Generic Audio Driver stopped the crackling — that already confirms the issue is with the Realtek driver/implementation, not your hardware. Let me address your points one by one:

Step 2 — Format (16-bit, 44100 Hz vs 48000 Hz)

DVD Quality = 44100 Hz (CD quality) or 48000 Hz are both standard.

Most Realtek drivers default to 48 kHz, while Windows generic defaults to 44.1 kHz.

The difference won’t cause crackling — it’s just sample rate alignment. You can safely leave it at 16-bit, 44100 Hz unless you specifically use apps that prefer 48 kHz (like some games or video editors).

Step 4 — Realtek Audio Manager missing

Many modern HP laptops (including OMENs) don’t ship with Realtek Audio Console/Manager anymore.

Instead, HP integrates Realtek controls into OMEN Gaming Hub or leaves Windows to manage it.

So it’s normal that you couldn’t find “Realtek HD Audio Manager.” Don’t worry — nothing’s wrong.

Step 5 — Correct Drivers & BIOS for your OMEN Laptop - 15-en0001la

Here’s the exact support page for your model:

🔗 HP OMEN 15-en0001la Drivers & Software

On that page, you’ll see:

Audio Driver (Realtek)

Category: Driver-Audio

Latest version for Windows 11/10 (usually labeled Realtek High Definition Audio Driver).

Download & install — this will replace the generic driver.

BIOS Update

Category: BIOS

Check if your installed version (you can see it by pressing Win + R → type msinfo32) is older.

If yes, update to the latest. Sometimes crackling issues are reduced with BIOS + chipset updates.

Chipset Driver

Category: Driver-Chipset

Always good to update chipset alongside audio.

Suggested Next Steps

Stay on Generic Driver if it works flawlessly (many gamers prefer this).

If you want full Realtek features (EQ, enhancements, mic noise suppression), install the HP-provided Realtek driver from your support page.

After reinstalling Realtek driver → reboot → check if crackling returns. If it does, stick with Generic — it’s stable and safe.

Hi @PennyIsSilly

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You're clearly not just guessing—your troubleshooting instincts are spot-on. The fact that switching drivers temporarily resolves the crackling confirms this is likely a Realtek driver instability or conflict with Windows audio enhancements

Let’s walk through a targeted fix path that goes beyond basic reinstalling:

Step-by-Step Fix for Realtek Audio Crackling

1. Switch to Microsoft’s Generic Audio Driver

This often stabilizes audio when Realtek’s driver misbehaves.

  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Sound, video and game controllers
  • Right-click Realtek(R) Audio > Update Driver
  • Choose: Browse my computer > Let me pick from a list
  • Select High Definition Audio Device (Microsoft)

Test your sound—this driver lacks enhancements but is often more stable.

2. Disable Audio Enhancements

Realtek’s enhancements can cause distortion.

  • Right-click the speaker icon > Sounds
  • Go to Playback tab > Properties of your default device
  • Under Enhancements, check Disable all enhancements
  • Under Advanced, set format to 16-bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality)

Apply and test again.

3. Adjust Power Settings

Low power states can cause audio dropouts.

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options
  • Select High Performance
  • Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
  • Expand Processor power management
    • Set Minimum processor state to 100%

4. Clean Reinstall Realtek Driver

If you still prefer Realtek’s driver:

  • Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl, press Enter
  • Uninstall Realtek Audio Manager
  • Restart your PC
  • Download the latest Realtek driver from HP’s support site
  • Install and reboot

5. Check for BIOS and Chipset Updates

Some crackling issues stem from outdated firmware.

  • Visit HP’s support page for your laptop model
  • Install:
    • Latest BIOS
    • Intel Chipset Driver
    • HP UEFI Firmware Update

If the issue persists even after all this, it may be worth testing with an external USB sound card or Bluetooth speaker to isolate hardware vs. driver behavior.

Let me know your laptop model and I can pull the exact driver and BIOS links for you.

You're clearly doing everything right—let’s get this sorted once and for all.

Hello! Thanks for replying! This has been extremely useful, the Generic Audio Driver is free from the crackling issues.

However I had some difficulties with a few of the steps
for starters in step 2 the advanced format was 16-bit, 44100 Hz (DVD Quality) instead of CD but i'm not sure if that's important or not.

On step 4 I didn't find any application called "Realtek Audio Manager"

and finally for step 5 my laptop is a  "OMEN Laptop - 15-en0001la" and I'm on the latest Windows 11 update. I tried looking for the installs myself but there were a few varied options and I didn't want to pick the wrong one, so if you could help me with the exact driver and BIOS links that'd be a huge help.

Thank you very much! I hope to hear back from you.

Again, thanks,

Penny

Edit: Also, I wanted to ask if after solving the issue if I could enable the sound enhancements, I'm an avid music listener and sound quality is very important to me.

That’s great news, Penny! 🎉

Audio crackling can be one of those tricky issues where it’s a mix of drivers, Windows updates, and sometimes even background services fighting each other — so it makes sense that one of the steps fixed it even if it’s hard to pinpoint which.

I’m really glad it’s sorted out for you now — enjoy the crystal-clear sound! 🎶

And thanks for your kind words — wishing you the same fantastic day/week/year/lifetime! 🌟

You're awesome, and I'm honored to have been your go-to guide today! 😊
