While i use this laptop for gaming occasionally, such as minecraft , call of duty etc, some other casual games. I have started to face problems where my fans would ramp up out of no where ( I check thermals and they are okay) and my laptop just completely starts to lag, games lose all fps, laptop starts to stutter. then all the issues disappear then come back after maybe 10 minutes and it just keeps happening and its very annoying. I dont have any software on this, barely any, ive checked all drivers, BIOS and windows, all seems to be okay. I am running my laptop to an external display running at 2k res, but this was never a problem before and was running completely fine until recently im not sure whats going on.
If someone who might know or who had a similar issue has a fix for this please let me know as ive searched online and cannot think of anything. One thing i think it could possibly be is loss of power on the GPU and CPU then it just kicks back in, cant really think of anything else to explain this.

Hi @Mxstafix,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issues you're describing with your HP Spectre x360 16-inch 2-in-1 Laptop could stem from various factors. Here are steps to diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Thermal Throttling or Power Delivery Issues
Even though thermals appear fine, the system might be throttling due to power delivery inconsistencies.
Check Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings.
- Ensure you are using the "High Performance" or "Ultimate Performance" power plan if available.
- Verify the system is plugged into the original HP power adapter rated for the laptop.
2. GPU Driver or Display Issue
The external display running at 2K resolution might be pushing the GPU harder, especially if it's using the RTX 4050 for rendering.
- Reinstall GPU Drivers:
- Use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to remove your current NVIDIA drivers.
- Reinstall the latest drivers directly from the NVIDIA website.
- Switch to Integrated Graphics Temporarily:
- Disconnect the external display and switch to the integrated Intel GPU to test if the issue persists. This can help isolate the problem to the RTX 4050.
3. Background Processes and Malware
Unnoticed processes or malware could intermittently tax your system.
- Clean Startup:
- Open Task Manager > Startup and disable unnecessary startup programs.
- Run Malware Scans:
- Use Windows Defender or a third-party tool like Malwarebytes to ensure your system is clean.
4. Update Firmware and BIOS
Even though you've checked BIOS, ensure you have the latest firmware for your RTX 4050 and system BIOS. Visit HP's support page for your specific model and verify updates.
5. External Display Configurations
Running a 2K display externally increases the load on the GPU.
Check Refresh Rate:
- Right-click on the desktop > Display Settings > Advanced Display Settings.
- Ensure the external display is set to a reasonable refresh rate (e.g., 60Hz or 120Hz).
Adjust Game Settings:
- Lower resolution or graphical settings in games to reduce the load on the GPU.
6. Run Diagnostics HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures
HP laptops come with built-in diagnostics tools:
- HP Hardware Diagnostics:
- Restart the laptop and press Esc repeatedly to access the startup menu.
- Select F2 > System Tests and run full diagnostics to check for hardware issues.
7. Test Power and Hardware Integrity
Power fluctuations or failing hardware can cause these symptoms.
Test With and Without Charger:
- Run games while plugged in and on the battery to see if the issue is isolated to power delivery.
Battery Health Check:
- Use HP Support Assistant to verify battery health.

I hope this helps.

I have this exact same issue, 2024 Spectre x360 16 i7 155h 4050 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, and this is happening to me. I have a 3D Home Designer application that I can recreate this issue repeatedly. I've used HWMonitor to look at temps and the 4050 is fine although the CPU hits 102C shown in the max column, but I've never seen it sustained at that level. It starts getting choppy on rendering. I've seen this on rendering video as well.
We've had some cold mornings here in Texas and I've set it outside when it was having this issue and it stopped doing it, so it would seem that it is a thermal issue. Sometimes even when sitting idle, the cooling fans spin up significantly.
I have extended warranty, and I am going to open up a ticket and will report back. Was going to reload everything but I'm afraid that would be a waste of time.
I have also taken video of this issue and can show it if anyone is interested.
