Hi Max3Aj,

Finally I have good news.  

After 2 more system  restores I managed to get a stable environment where I could successfully install HPSA - I had installed HPPC HD first just in case..  The reported memory errors have also ceased, so I can only assume there must have been transient errors causing all the problems.

 

I really appreciate the help I have received and I am sorry that I can't report what it was that solved the issue.  All's good that ends well.
