I purchased this laptop a few days ago. It came with Windows 10 in S mode. I was unable to update any drivers through Support Assistant with the app in S mode. HP allows a conversion to Windows 10 Home which I did.
Afterwards when I ran the Support Assistant it was still the app that came with Wiindows S Mode. I uninstalled the app through settings. There was no listing for support assistant in Uninstall Programs.
Now when I try to install the Support Assistant (SP86979) V8.6.18.11 from the software and drivers section for this laptop it repeatedly tells me that there is a newer version of HP Support Assistant installed. Setup will now close.
I'm in an endless loop.
How do I get the old app completely off and install the new support assistant? Thanks.

Try again.
- This time, when asked whether to remove "personal information" for the HPSA, answser "Yes".
- Uninstall the HPSA (HP Support Assistant) software > Restart the computer and log in
- Uninstall the HP Solutions Framework software > Restart the computer and log in
- Download. save. and install a fresh copy of the HP Support Assistant > Restart the computer and log in
Details:
Read sections, then decide how to proceed.
Option - The HP Support Assistant - Remove and Install
Install the Latest version of HP Support Assistant
- Remove the old version of HPSA
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features
Scroll down, find, Uninstall the HP Support Assistant
After the uninstall is completed, Restart the computer and log in
NOTES
For "complete" cleanup of the old version of the HP Support Assistant: When / If asked whether you want to save any of the presets / personal HPSA information, respond to have any (personal) data associated with the program removed along with the HPSA software.
If you also wish (or need) to remove the HP Support Solutions Framework (from Programs and Features), FIRST uninstall the HP Support Assistant and Restart the computer; the Framework software can then be removed / uninstalled from Programs and Features.
After the HPSA is uninstalled (and the computer is Restarted), check to ensure the software is actually “gone”.
Settings > Apps > Apps & features >
Scroll down the list, look for HP Support Assistant (and / or HP Support Solutions Framework)
If the stubborn software found in the list, click on the software and uninstall it.
- Download, Save, Install the latest version of the HPSA to your computer
Website / Download
- If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, select run as Administratorand install.
- After the software is installed: Restart the computer and log in
- After the software is installed, PIN the program to your Windows Start Screen
Windows key (Start) > list "All apps" > open category "H"
Click open category HP Help and Support
Right-Click on HP Support Assistant > PIN to Start

Thanks for the reply.
My issue is I purchased a laptop running windows 10 in so mode with a crippled HP Support Assistant. Cannot do manual updates. It is version 9.1.131.0
After I went through the Microsoft store and updated to Windows 10 home I then tried to install the HP Support Assistant listed for my laptop on the HP Support Page. It is version 8.6. 18.11.
Once I uninstalled HP Support Assistant from the Apps (it was NOT listed under Add/Remove Programs) and then tried to install version 8, I continually just get a message that a newer version of Support Assistant is installed. Tried to delete a few registration entries I found and cannot find a thing in Program Files. To complicate matters, there is NO download version for version 9 windows s mode of support assistant. I use Support Assistant on my hp desktop to keep up to date with latest updates. Don't want to do a complete restore because i will be back to windows 10 s mode and I don't know if it will include version 9 of Support Assistant. They sold a bunch of these at Costco on Black Friday and 99% of the people updated to windows 10 home. So I don't know if they don't use support assistant or not.

OK. I am glad it is fixed.
The solution is not one I would have proposed: I have not used Ccleaner (or any other similar software) for years. I remember having the opinion that this registry cleaner was the most benign (least likely to kill the OS) than other products of this type.
Happy Computing!
