Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

In our company experiencing an issue with HP Support Assistant on Windows 10 laptops in an environment where users have limited privileges. When users are logged in as administrators, HP Support Assistant successfully installs drivers and performs other administrative tasks. However, when users are logged in with limited privileges, HP Support Assistant is unable to execute driver updates.

I would like HP Support Assistant to work under limited user accounts to enable users to independently update drivers. Is there a way to achieve this without granting admin rights to users? Are there any recommended configurations or procedures that I can follow to enable the functionality of HP Support Assistant under limited privileges on Windows 10 computers?

Why doesn't the driver update work under the user? Can it be set to work WITHOUT ADMIN rights, we cannot give admin rights to the user!

Thank you in advance for your response and support.

Best regards,"

Welcome to the HP Community --

In general, what you want is not available for standard users.

HP Support Assistant requires that the user running the software have the necessary privileges to complete the task.

Installing software implies the account user has the necessary access to change the software on the computer.

In practice, if the version of Windows supports it (for example, Windows Pro), look into using limited privilege for certain tasks and actions.

User Account Control - User, Admin, and "Other" account types

Create and Manage User Accounts and Privileges in Windows 10

Group Policy is a powerful tool - the 'net provides an abundance of data on the subject.

You might be able to provide access to a single program -- it might then be necessary to add UAC control to allow the user the access to the type of changes (installing software).

Thank you for your response. We have not used HP laptops before, and this is our first time purchasing 53 HP laptops, and we are experiencing this issue.

You must understand that we have over 800 Lenovo laptops, and the driver updates for Lenovo laptops work under the SYSTEM user account. Lenovo System Update  utilizes the system user account to perform updates, which allows us to safely update drivers while users continue to work on their computers. It is important for us to have the same functionality available for your HP devices.

Since we regularly upgrade our operating system and drivers frequently change, it is crucial that driver updates can be performed under the user account. However, please note that HP Support Assistant does not work even with the system account. We do not want to require users to run software with the necessary privileges to complete tasks.

In this regard, I suggest contacting HP software support directly and explaining our specific needs and requirements regarding driver updates under the SYSTEM user account. They might have additional options or recommendations that could help us achieve this without granting admin rights to users.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and efforts. If you have any further questions or need additional support, please feel free to contact us.

BTW, we are familiar with UAC, GPO... but our issue is not related to them... We want you to contact us and send us a new version of the HP Support Assistant  that works with the System account. Without it, HP laptops in our company are exposed to security risks, and we cannot continue purchasing HP laptops for corporate use. Lenovo System Update works on the same operating system and with the same settings without any issues; Lenovo uses the SYSTEM account.

Best regards.

You are welcome.

Those of us who are "Not HP" have no access to how -- or if -- HP Support Assistant behavior can be changed.

HP Support Assistant is a consumer class software -- it is not meant for deployment in an environment that does not meet its particular requirements.

Hi @DjapeD,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the HP Support Assistant is not installing driver updates for limited user accounts on Windows 10, there could be a few possible reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Run HP Support Assistant as an administrator.

  • Right-click on the HP Support Assistant shortcut or executable file.
  • Select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.
  • If prompted, enter the administrator password.

Check user account permissions.

  • Ensure that the limited user account has the necessary permissions to install software and make system changes.
  • To check user account permissions, go to "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Family & other users" (or "Other users" depending on your Windows version).
  • Select the limited user account and click on "Change account type" or "Change account privileges" to grant administrative privileges if needed.

Disable User Account Control (UAC).

  • User Account Control can sometimes prevent software installations. Temporarily disabling it can help troubleshoot the issue.
  • Go to "Control Panel" > "User Accounts" > "User Accounts" > "Change User Account Control settings."
  • Move the slider to the lowest level ("Never notify") and click "OK."
  • Restart the computer and try installing the driver updates again.

Check for updates manually.

  • If the above steps don't work, you can try manually checking for updates using Windows Update instead of relying on HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update."
  • Click on "Check for updates" and install any available driver updates.
  • Restart the computer and check if the driver updates are installed correctly.

Reinstall HP Support Assistant.

  • If the issue persists, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to "Control Panel" > "Programs" > "Programs and Features."
  • Locate HP Support Assistant in the list of installed programs, right-click on it, and select "Uninstall."
  • Restart the computer and download the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the official HP website.
  • Install the software and try installing the driver updates again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Alden4

We need an option in HP Support Assistant to install updates for restricted user accounts using the system account, as we have with Lenovo laptops. Lenovo uses the system account for updates instead of an admin account. We cannot grant admin rights for installation on restricted user accounts, as it would give them the ability to install anything. We can allow the system account to perform updates with HP Support Assistant.

Currently, we have over 800 Lenovo laptops and have purchased 54 HP laptops. We need a solution for mass driver updates for our company. We require an automated solution for users, similar to what Lenovo offers. Having administrators connect to laptops over the years to install patches is not a viable solution because users do not have the necessary rights.

It's not a problem with UAC, and it's not an issue with Windows updates.

Does HP Support Assistant enable IT administrators to distribute updates for software, drivers, and BIOS in a managed environment from a local server? Can it be set to work without admin rights? We cannot give admin rights to the user! Can HP Support Assistant utilize system users for installation (not admin users, not regular users)?
