When i click check for updates it says the PC must restart, but clicking the restart button does nothing. I have reinstalled the app, but it is still the same. The laptop is only a few months old.

Any ideas please - and bear in mind I am a real beginner as regards doing anything technical.

Hi @Silverwood,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Support Assistant is instructing you to restart your computer to complete updates, but the restart function doesn't seem to be responding. Here are some steps you can follow:

Manual Restart:

  • Attempt a manual restart of your computer. This can be done by:

    • Pressing the Windows button on your taskbar, selecting the power button, and clicking "Restart."

    • Alternatively, hold down the physical power button on your laptop until it turns off, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on.

Ensure HP Support Assistant is Updated:

  • Make sure you have the latest version of HP Support Assistant. You can download the latest version from HP's official website.

Check for System Updates:

  • Sometimes, incomplete Windows updates can interfere with other applications:

    • Go to your Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

    • Click "Check for updates" and run any pending updates.

Run Windows in Safe Mode:

  • Boot your computer in Safe Mode and try launching HP Support Assistant there. Safe Mode minimizes the running processes and might reveal if there's a conflict.

Review Your System's Resources:

  • Ensure your system isn't overworking, which can be caused by too many running programs or insufficient RAM.

  • Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager and review which programs might be consuming excessive resources.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

The reset for the laptop is fine, the issue is the box that says reset now. It does not work.

Ok - its on the laptop, so I will try and do that. However, I found  workaround. Basically it says in order for updates to work kt needs to restart, not shutdown. Then you have the two options ignore or restart. It is the restart box that will not work, it does not restart the laptop. The ignore button works fine. So what you need to do is manually restart in the normal way with start. Then you do not get this message again, of course this still does not explain why it happens.

Hi @Silverwood,

Thank you for sharing the details. I understand how frustrating it must feel when the restart button just sits there without responding, while the ignore option clicks away smoothly. Manually restarting through the Start menu is a clear workaround, and I appreciate you pointing that out. We’ll continue looking into why the restart option doesn’t trigger properly.
