Hi,

I run windows 11 home edition on a hp 14-ck0501sa notebook.

The light next to my built in webcam has been flickering at times, and at times the camera is completely dead. I have tried to obtain the webcam driver/s from hp.com, to no avail. Updating the driver via device manager or windows update doesn't work.

Trying the solutions offered in answers to other webcam questions on this forum haven't worked. Any other ideas?

Hi @Dialogues

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your webcam flickers or doesn’t work at all, especially when the built-in camera is essential for meetings or video calls.

Let’s go through a few more steps to resolve the issue with your HP TrueVision HD Webcam on your HP 14-ck0501sa running Windows 11.

1. Check Camera Privacy Settings

Sometimes, the webcam may not work due to privacy settings that block access to it:

Open Settings (press Win + I).

Go to Privacy & Security > Camera.

Ensure that Camera access is turned On, and check if apps have permission to use the camera (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.).

2. Disable and Re-enable the Webcam in Device Manager

It’s possible that the webcam driver needs a reset:

Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select Device Manager).

Expand the Imaging Devices section.

Right-click on your HP TrueVision HD Webcam and select Disable device.

Wait for a few seconds, then right-click the webcam again and select Enable device.

Check if the webcam starts working after that.

3. Uninstall and Reinstall the Webcam Driver

Sometimes, the driver may have become corrupted or incorrectly installed:

In Device Manager, right-click your HP TrueVision HD Webcam under Imaging Devices.

Select Uninstall device.

Check the option that says Delete the driver software for this device (if available).

Restart your computer.

Windows 11 should automatically attempt to reinstall the default driver upon reboot. If it doesn’t, proceed with the manual installation.

4. Manually Download and Install the Driver

If the automatic driver update doesn't work, you can manually install the driver from HP’s official site:

Visit the HP Support website and enter your HP 14-ck0501sa model number.

Under Drivers & Downloads, select your Windows 11 version and check for the webcam drivers.

If available, download the webcam driver and manually install it.

If HP doesn’t have a separate webcam driver listed, it’s likely using a generic USB video driver built into Windows. You could also try installing the Intel(R) Smart Connect Technology or Intel(R) Camera Driver if your laptop uses an Intel chipset for the webcam.

5. Run Windows Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in troubleshooting tool that can help detect issues with the camera:

Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

Run the Camera Troubleshooter and follow any instructions that pop up.

6. Check for Windows 11 Updates

Make sure your system is fully up-to-date, as sometimes Windows Updates can fix bugs or update drivers for hardware:

Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for Updates.

Install any available updates, including optional driver updates that Windows may suggest.

7. Use the Camera in Safe Mode

Running the system in Safe Mode helps isolate potential third-party software conflicts:

Restart your laptop and hold the Shift key while clicking Restart.

Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and click Restart.

After the restart, select 4) Enable Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, check if the webcam works. If it does, it could be an issue with a third-party app or service interfering with the camera.

If after trying all the above steps, the webcam is still flickering or completely dead, it could be an issue with the hardware itself (e.g., the webcam module may be faulty).

Feel free to let me know how it goes or if you'd like further clarification on any of the steps!

Hi @Hawks_Eye

Many thanks for taking the trouble to offer a number of solutions.

I tried safe mode, but the camera didn't function in it. However, after leaving safe mode and restarting the pc, the camera started functioning. However, this functionality is intermittent.

The privacy settings are fine, I've tried disabling and even uninstalling the webcam from device manager, and re-enabling or reinstalling it. Windows update and troubleshooter doesn't really help either. I can't find the driver for it anywhere, neither on hp.com, nor on the intel site.

Any other ideas?

Kind regards,

Zubair.
