Hi @Ola_77,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP USB External DVDRW Drive is not working, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

Check Connections: Ensure that the USB cable connecting the drive to your computer is securely plugged in. Try using a different USB port on your computer to rule out port-related issues.

Restart Your Computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues between the drive and your computer.

Update Drivers: Make sure your computer has the latest drivers installed for the DVD drive. You can usually find these on the HP support website under your specific model of DVD drive.

Check Device Manager (Windows):

  • Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager".
  • Look for any entries under "DVD/CD-ROM drives" or "USB controllers" that indicate a problem (marked with a yellow triangle or exclamation mark).
  • Right-click on the problematic device and choose "Update driver" or "Uninstall device", then restart your computer.

Check System Preferences (Mac):

  • Go to "System Preferences" > "CDs & DVDs" and ensure the settings are correct for how you want your Mac to handle CDs and DVDs when they are inserted.
  • If the drive appears in System Information but not in Finder, it might need repair. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assistance.

Check Power and Cables: Ensure that the drive has power (if required) and that all cables are securely connected.

Test with Different Media: Try inserting different types of discs (CDs, DVDs) to see if the drive recognizes any of them.

Check for Physical Damage: Inspect the drive for any physical damage that might be causing the issue.

Update Firmware: If applicable, check for firmware updates for the DVD drive on the HP support website and follow their instructions to update it.

Try on Another Computer: Test the DVD drive on another computer to see if it works there. This can help determine if the issue is with the drive or your computer.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the DVD drive itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
