Hello,

I have an HP Victus 16-r0000 that’s seen a thing or two.

Currently, the laptop only charges when powered off. Here is what has happened so far and the steps I have taken:

- Dog chewed original charger, I soldered severed wires back together

- This fixed the charger, but a few months later, the laptop would only charge when powered off.
- Purchased new, third party charger to specs of original

- This worked for about 3 months until the same issue occurred.
- Purchased and replaced DC-In Jack Connector

- Same issue: only charges when powered off (using newest charger)

- According to BIOS tests: AC Adapter FAILED

- I also tried uninstalling battery drivers and restarting as suggested in similar posts. No good.

Between the eventual failures each charger, my laptop had some…exciting experiences weeks/month prior to failure: first time, came in contact with water;  second time, suffered back-voltage from Arduino project gone wrong.

My question: How can I isolate the issue? Right now, my guess is hardware issue somewhere on the motherboard. Is there a way to confirm this? Can anyone add more specificity and/or solutions to this diagnosis?

Thank you for your time!

Sam H.

@SamHallBuckets, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Test with a Known Good Charger

Try a different charger (even if it’s not the original) to rule out any charger issues.

Check the DC Jack

Use a multimeter to check if the power jack is connected properly to the motherboard.

Make sure there are no loose wires or connections.

Update BIOS

Go into BIOS and check if there are any updates available for your laptop.

An outdated BIOS can sometimes mess with charging.

Hard Reset

Disconnect the battery and charger.

Hold the power button for 30 seconds to reset the laptop’s power system.

Reconnect the battery and charger to see if that fixes it.

Check Battery Health in BIOS

In BIOS, check the battery status. If it says the battery is damaged or unhealthy, you might need a replacement.

Run HP Diagnostics

Restart your laptop and press ESC to open the Startup Menu, then press F2 to run diagnostics.

This will test the AC adapter and battery for issues.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
