Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-d1 (53F54AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I recently noticed that my HP Victus laptop stops charging a few seconds after I power it on, even if the charger is still plugged in. If I unplug the charger at the wall and plug it back in, it will charge for a few seconds before it stops charging again - if I simply unplug the charger from the laptop and plug it back in, it will not begin charging again at all. This problem persists after I shut the laptop down, however if I unplug the charger from the wall and plug it back in while the laptop is off then it will begin charging and will not stop charging after a few seconds - however, as soon as I turn the laptop on again, the orange charging light will go off again and it wills top charging.

I want to know if this issue is perhaps being caused by some sort of software issue on the laptop which is preventing the battery from receiving the power it needs, or if the issue is with my charging brick in which case I will need to get a replacement.

Hi @Cycl0n3Sw0rd,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm sorry to hear about the frustrating charging issue with your HP Victus laptop. Let’s work together to get this resolved. I'll start with a few questions to narrow down the cause, and then we'll walk through some troubleshooting steps.

  • When the laptop is powered on, have you noticed any error messages or notifications in Windows related to the battery or power supply?
  • Have you recently installed any updates, such as a BIOS update or battery management software, which might coincide with when the issue began?
  • Are you using the original HP charger that came with the laptop, or a third-party charger?

Perform a Power Reset:

  • Unplug the charger from the laptop and turn it off.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. This can help discharge any residual power that might be causing issues.
  • Once done, plug the charger back in and turn on the laptop to check if it charges properly.

Check Battery Health in BIOS:

  • With the laptop off, press the power button and immediately press F2 (or the key to access BIOS settings).
  • Go to the Battery Information section, if available, and check the battery's status. If the battery health shows as "Normal," then it's likely functioning correctly. If there's an issue indicated, it may be worth considering a battery replacement.

Update or Rollback the Battery Driver:

  • In Windows, open Device Manager by pressing Win + X and selecting it from the list.
  • Expand Batteries and right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
  • Select Uninstall device and then restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver. After it’s reinstalled, check if charging behavior has improved.

Test with a Different Power Outlet and Charger:

  • Plug the charger into a different wall outlet to rule out any issues with the electrical supply.
  • If possible, try using a different compatible HP charger to see if the behavior persists, which can help identify if your charger may be the issue.

Update the BIOS:

  • Visit the HP Support website, enter your laptop’s model, and check if there’s a BIOS update available. A BIOS update can sometimes resolve power or charging issues.
  • If there’s a newer version, follow the instructions on HP’s site to update it, as this may help stabilize the charging connection.

If the issue persists after these steps, it could point to a hardware issue, potentially with the charging port or battery,

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I haven't seen or received any Windows error messages or notifications about the battery or power supply, and I am indeed using the original charging cable which came with my laptop. I did recently update my BIOS, however the problem began occurring before I updated my BIOS as I thought by updating my BIOS the problem may be solved but it was not.

I tried performing a Power Reset but this did not solve the issue. I also tested the Battery Health and AC Adapter in the BIOS but neither of them seemed to have any issues. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for the battery and charger but this did nothing. I have also tested it in multiple plug points but the result is the same.

However I have noticed something else. When I tested it with a charger from my old HP Pavilion laptop, the charging did not stop when I turned the laptop on but it kept charging - however, I am not sure if using this older charger would be a viable option going forward as it it six years old at this point and also outputs 50 W less than my current laptop's charger so I don't know if it would be powerful enough to keep my laptop charging while I am using it or playing games, etc. Additionally, when I tested my current laptop's charger on my old laptop, it kept charging after being switched on.

Another thing I noticed is that when I charged the laptop to 100% while it was switched off, and then turned it on, the charging did not stop as it usually would. Perhaps the laptop will only stay charging when it is already at 100% as that is when it doesn't have to output as much wattage? I'm not sure.

I think the problem is either with the charger (although I am unsure since if that were the case I would think it would not charge at all, as well as it was able to keep charging my older laptop with no issues) or there is a software which starts up when I turn the computer on that is maybe limiting the wattage coming in to the laptop and thus turning off the charger.

Hi,

I have noticed something else about my charging issue, and it has to do with the HP Omen Gaming Hub. In the Performance Control settings I have it set to Performance Mode while plugged in so that I can get the maximum performance while playing games, and I have it set to automatically switch to Eco Mode when unplugged. However, lately if I play games while in Performance Mode, that seems to be the trigger for turning off the charging.

I was playing GTA V while in Performance Mode and it kept switching the charger off which put it in Eco Mode - when I would plug it back in which would switch it back to Performance Mode, it would stop charging again. To test this further, I switched it to Eco Mode while still plugged in and the charger stayed on while playing the game (but my performance took a big hit). There is something that is preventing my laptop from staying on charge while in Performance Mode (something that is stopping all the power coming in which is needed to power the fans, I think) - and I think this is why the charger would switch off when the laptop would turn on, as the laptop would switch to Performance Mode on startup and would then stop charging for whatever reason.

Is this an issue with the AC Adapter not being able to supply enough power? In that case, would I need to buy a new AC Adapter/one that can provide a higher wattage than the one I currently have?

Let me know, thanks

Declan
