Hello HP Support Team,

I am facing an issue with my laptop’s built-in HP Wide Vision HD Camera.

The camera is detected by Windows and also passes HP Hardware Diagnostics successfully, which confirms that the hardware is functioning correctly. However, the camera does not turn on in Windows or browser applications.

Here are the symptoms:

Windows Camera app opens with a black screen or forcefully closes

Browsers show a “hardware error” or “camera blocked by another application”

The camera appears in Device Manager with no error symbols

HP Hardware Diagnostics reports the camera as working fine

Troubleshooting already performed:

Uninstalled and reinstalled camera driver via Device Manager

       Restarted the system multiple times

Verified camera privacy permissions in Windows

Uninstalled OBS Studio and other applications that could lock the camera

Tested with Microsoft generic “USB Video Device” driver

Performed hard reset and system file check

Despite this, the issue persists. Since HP Support does not list a dedicated camera driver for my model, I believe this may be a driver stack conflict, firmware issue, or HP privacy service bug.

I would appreciate your guidance on:

An official camera driver or firmware update for my model

Any HP-specific services or security features that could be blocking the camera

Additional troubleshooting steps or recovery options

Please let me know if you need system details such as model number or Windows version.

Thank you for your assistance.

Kind regards,
[Munavvar Basha]

Hi @Xonn

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how discouraging it feels to have the camera detected and passing diagnostics, yet still not function in apps. You’ve already done an excellent job covering the basics—driver reinstall, permissions, resets, and even testing with the generic driver.

Let’s go deeper into steps that often resolve this type of situation:

Check Windows Privacy Settings Thoroughly

  • Open Windows Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
  • Ensure “Camera access” is turned on for the device.
  • Scroll down and confirm that individual apps (Camera, browsers, Teams, Zoom, etc.) are allowed to use the camera.

Disable Background Camera Services

  • Some HP security or privacy services can reserve the camera.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • End tasks related to camera privacy or security software temporarily, then test the camera.

Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers

  • Outdated BIOS or chipset drivers can cause conflicts with integrated devices.
  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Enter your exact laptop model, then download and install the latest BIOS and chipset updates.

Reinstall Camera Driver via HP Image

  • Even if a dedicated camera driver isn’t listed, reinstalling the Intel/AMD chipset and graphics drivers from HP’s site often refreshes the camera stack.
  • Download and install both graphics and chipset drivers for your model.

Reset the Camera App

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  • Locate “Camera,” select Advanced Options, then choose “Reset.”
  • Restart the PC and test again.

Test in Safe Mode

  • Boot into Windows Safe Mode with Networking.
  • Open the Camera app. If it works here, a third-party service or driver is interfering in normal mode.

Note

  • There is no separate firmware update for the HP Wide Vision HD Camera; updates are bundled with BIOS and chipset packages.
  • HP privacy services (such as HP Privacy Camera Kill Switch, if your model has one) can physically or logically disable the camera. Check if your laptop has a privacy shutter or function key (often F8 or F10) that toggles camera access.

The key is to refresh the driver stack through BIOS/chipset updates and ensure no background service is locking the camera. Once you’ve tried these steps, the camera should respond more consistently in Windows and browser applications.
