HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-da0000 (903S8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Whenever I add a function to a key sequence it resets whenever I open the HP programmable key application and doesn't actually assign the function. Also whenever I use the key itself it gives me the option to open either OMEN or myHP, which I do not want.

Hi @__Fury__,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It sounds like your HP Envy 17.3 inch Laptop PC is having issues with the HP Programmable Key application not properly saving key assignments and defaulting to options like OMEN or myHP. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Update the HP Programmable Key Application

Check for Updates:

  • Go to the Microsoft Store or HP Support website to ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Programmable Key application installed.
  • Update the application if there are any available updates.

Reinstall the Application:

  • If updating doesn't help, try uninstalling the HP Programmable Key application and reinstalling it from the Microsoft Store or HP Support website.

Step 2: Clear Previous Key Assignments

  1. Reset the Programmable Keys:
    • Open the HP Programmable Key application.
    • Look for an option to Reset to Default Settings or Clear All Assignments.
    • Resetting may resolve conflicts or incorrect settings from previous assignments.

Step 3: Assign Functions to Programmable Keys

  1. Open the HP Programmable Key Application.
  2. Assign Functions:
    • Click on the key you want to assign a function to.
    • Choose the desired function from the list of options. Avoid using OMEN or myHP unless specifically required.
    • Save the changes before closing the application.

Step 4: Check Application Permissions and Conflicts

Run the Application as Administrator:

  • Right-click on the HP Programmable Key application and choose Run as administrator. This can help in saving the settings correctly.

Check for Conflicting Software:

  • Sometimes other HP applications or third-party software can interfere with the key assignments.
  • Disable or uninstall any unnecessary HP applications, such as OMEN Gaming Hub or myHP, if you are not using them.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @__Fury__ ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Step 5: Adjust Startup and Shortcut Settings

Disable Unwanted Startup Services:

  • Open Task Manager > Startup tab, and disable OMEN and myHP from starting automatically with your laptop.

Manage Shortcut Assignments:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Keyboard, and check if there are any default shortcuts assigned to the keys that might override your programmable settings.

Step 6: Modify HP Programmable Key Configuration Files (Advanced)

  1. Locate Configuration Files:
    • Sometimes the configuration files for the HP Programmable Key application can be found in the installation directory or under AppData.
    • Open File Explorer, type %appdata% in the address bar, and navigate to the HP folder.
  2. Manually Edit Configuration:
    • Look for configuration files (such as .ini or .xml files) related to the programmable keys.
    • Open these files with a text editor and ensure the key assignments are correct. Save any changes.

Step 7: Disable HP Programmable Key Functions

  1. Open the HP Programmable Key Application.
  2. Remove All Assignments:
    • If you no longer want to use these keys for programmable functions, you can set them to "No Action" or leave them unassigned within the application.

These steps should help you assign functions to your programmable keys without them resetting or defaulting to OMEN or myHP options.

If the issue persists after trying these steps, it may be a bug or a deeper software conflict. Contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
