I have been getting these error messages today and after they appear, I can't open any new applications.
For example, if MS Excel is open, then I can continue working in it, but if it's not already open, then I have to restart the computer.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I understand that you are seeing the error "MSGSVC.exe & OneDrive.exe application error" and then you are not able to open any applications. If the application is open you can continue to work but to open any new one, you must restart your notebook.
Here are two links that I hope will help:
Fix OneDrive sync problems with Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista (from support.office.com)
Error with One Drive after windows 10 reset, says four "Files" could not be synced (from answers.microsoft.com).
