OMEN by HP - 17-w200 CTO

I have an HP Omen laptop that was factory configured.  The C drive was was partitioned in  3 sections, the first section consisting of 475 gigs,  then a Recovery partition of 980mb, then the balance of the 900+ gigs hard drive storage.  Problem is when programs are loaded they automatically store all the relevant information on that 1st section.  I have moved all file storage to that third area, but program upgrades will soon become a problem.   I can't redefine the space because of that recovery partition in the middle ............ Can the recovery partition be stored off on an external drive allowing the 1st and 3rd sections to be merged and then added later.
