Hard drive not found

This is the second time this computer won't recognized the HD had to send it to HP to get it fix and now I can't talk to a person because the guaranteed is expired. 

Anybody knows if I can just replaced the HD by myself? or does it have to be sent out to get fix?

In this case you can replace HDD. The following Guide gives you information what you have to do from page 36.

I may help you more when I know what EXACTLY is your machine. Please use System information to see what is its SKU, for example

I changed the HDD and it boots but it doesn't have an operating system in the new HD, is there a way to install an OS or would I have to buy a copy of Windows?
