Recently while playing a game my screen turned black and at the same time the keyboard stopped working.

At first it will flash on and off for like 5 seconds then stay fully black. I can hear the game running in the background and if I connect an external monitor and keyboard I can still play the game and use it.

I have tried downloading an older driver for the graphics card however that did not fix the issue.

Then I have selected to use only the dedicated gpu (4060) and with that even when in the home screen with no apps running it will keep flickering,  and eventually staying black. In hybrid mode the laptop doesn't have that problem when using the integrated graphics thinking it could be something related to the gpu itself, but doesn't seem to be hardware since it still runs the game in the background.

An interesting par is that while I am in the lobby of that game it does not have this problem,  only when I'm in a match, and when the match ends the screen returns to normal.

Has anyone encountered this issue before and perhaps know some way to fix it?

Hi @David6710\,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I Understand your concern about  the screen turned black and at the same time the keyboard stopped working issue, don’t worry let me help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact model of your HP laptop.
  • Whether the issue happens only with this specific game or with other applications too.
  • If you’ve noticed any recent Windows updates or driver updates before the problem started.
  • Whether the flickering/black screen happens only on the built-in display or also on the external monitor when connected.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try in the meantime:

  1. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers
    • Visit HP Support and check if there are any BIOS or chipset driver updates available for your model. These updates often resolve GPU-related conflicts.
  2. Perform a Clean Graphics Driver Installation
    • Use a tool like Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely remove existing GPU drivers.
    • Then reinstall the latest NVIDIA drivers directly from NVIDIA’s website, not just Windows Update.
  3. Check Power Settings
    • In NVIDIA Control Panel, ensure “Preferred Graphics Processor” is set correctly.
    • Also, check Windows Power Options and set it to High Performance to avoid GPU throttling.
  4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • Restart your laptop and press F2 to launch HP’s built-in diagnostics. Run a full test on the display and GPU to rule out hardware faults.
  5. Test with Other Games/Apps
  • Try running a different game or a GPU-intensive benchmark. If the issue only occurs in one game, it may be a compatibility issue with that title.

Since you mentioned the problem disappears in hybrid mode (using integrated graphics), this does suggest the dedicated GPU or its driver is the main cause . If diagnostics show no hardware fault, it’s likely a driver or software conflict.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
