HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17m-ch1000 (436X2AV)

New Computer; regularlly run WIndows Update but am now consistently getting an install error for HP.

Hewlett-Packard - USB - 6/1/2018 12:00:00 AM - 46.2.2631.18152

Install error - 0x80070103

All drivers are up-to-date, or at least Windows tells me they are all installed.  How can I get rid of the error message?

Hi @OuttoSea1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code 0x80070103 typically occurs during driver installations and usually indicates that a driver update or installation is being attempted for a device that already has the correct or updated driver installed. Here's how to resolve it.

Steps to Resolve the Error:

Check Device Manager:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Look for any devices with a yellow triangle or error symbol. If you find any, right-click on the device and select Update driver.
  • You can also try Uninstalling the device and restarting your computer to let Windows reinstall the correct drivers.

Hide the Update: If Windows Update is repeatedly trying to install the same driver and it's causing the error, you can block the update from being applied again.

  • Download and run the Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930.
  • Use this tool to hide the update for the HP USB driver (which appears to be the source of the issue) and prevent it from being installed.

Manually Update the Driver:

  • Go to the HP Support Website and download the latest USB driver for your model: HP Drivers.
  • Make sure the driver version is newer or matches the one already installed. If so, manually installing it should resolve the error.

Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. This can help fix any update-related issues.

Check for Optional Updates:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click on View optional updates.
  • If there are any updates for your HP laptop that are not installed, apply them and restart the computer.

Reset Windows Update Components: If the issue persists, you can try resetting the Windows Update components.

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following commands:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start bits

  • Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

After completing these steps, the error should be resolved, and Windows should no longer attempt to install the same driver repeatedly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
