Having an array of issues with a hp pavilion g6

Ok so this is a long one. It runs on windows 7 and one night I tried booting 10 on it. Then it shut down my computer with a system disabled. Luckily I had already set a start up password and was able to sort it out. Until tonight. The trackpad has had issues with either flickering or not moving at all and when I reboot my system it just gives me a system error and when I attempted to log in it skimmed through all the mandatory start up and went straight to an account that isn't password locked with the trackpad not registering. I'm about to give up on it and just wipe the HDD and sell it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi @RY310

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with several issues on your HP Pavilion G6, including a trackpad malfunction, a system error, and startup/login issues after attempting to upgrade to Windows 10. Let's break down your issues and explore ways to resolve them before you consider wiping the HDD.

1. System Error / Startup Issues

The "System Disabled" error and the problems with the login process could be related to the BIOS settings, particularly after trying to install Windows 10. Since you mentioned that you had set a startup password, it's possible that the password is still in effect, or there could be some residual issues from the upgrade attempt.

Steps to troubleshoot:

Reset BIOS settings: If you haven't already, try resetting the BIOS to default settings. This will help resolve issues caused by the upgrade attempt or incorrect BIOS settings.

  1. Power off the laptop.
  2. Power it back on, and immediately press the F10 key to enter the BIOS.
  3. Once in the BIOS menu, look for an option that says Restore Defaults or Load Defaults (often in the Exit or Save & Exit menu).
  4. Save and exit the BIOS.

Disable Secure Boot (if you tried upgrading to Windows 10): If you attempted to upgrade to Windows 10, and your BIOS has Secure Boot enabled, it could be interfering with the boot process. Try disabling Secure Boot in BIOS.

  1. Go to BIOS settings by pressing F10 during boot.
  2. Navigate to the Boot Options tab.
  3. Look for Secure Boot and set it to Disabled.
  4. Save and exit.

System Repair: If you're still seeing the system error or unable to log in, you can try booting from a Windows 7 installation disk or repair disk to access Startup Repair.

  1. Insert the Windows 7 installation disk or repair disk into the laptop.
  2. Restart and boot from the disk (you may need to change boot order in BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD/USB).
  3. Select Repair Your Computer and then Startup Repair.

2. Trackpad Not Working (Flickering or Not Moving)

Trackpad issues can be caused by driver problems, hardware issues, or conflicts after upgrading to Windows 10.

Troubleshooting steps for the trackpad:

Reinstall Trackpad Drivers:

  1. Go to Device Manager (right-click Computer > Properties > Device Manager).
  2. Expand the Mice and other pointing devices section.
  3. Right-click the trackpad driver (usually called something like Synaptics or ELAN) and select Uninstall.
  4. Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

Update Trackpad Drivers:

  1. Go to the HP website and search for your specific laptop model (HP Pavilion G6).
  2. Download and install the latest trackpad drivers for Windows 7.
  3. If you upgraded to Windows 10, you may need to download drivers compatible with Windows 10.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
