I am looking for some help. I have just rebuilt a DV6000 (I know it's old, but I enjoy tinkering with older laptops) and I am unable to switch off the media LED lights, i.e. the ones that control the DVD player, sound, etc., as soon as I plug in the mains They come on and stay on if the laptop is not running, and they also stay on when the battery is connected, is there a way of turning them off.

I have removed and reinstalled the ribbon cable and checked for any breaks, As the power ribbon cable and the media cable look identical, I was wondering about swapping them over to see if the system still starts using the media cable, If it does not start, I know it's the cable, but I am worried if it's faulty, it could short and blow the motherboard. Any thoughts

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you, Elohi_NR, for your suggestion. I have difficulty using a phone, so if anyone could help, I would very much appreciate it. I now have the laptop fully restored with Vista Home Premium, including the webcam and wireless WIFI, I have minimum functions on the remote, so I think that the remote may switch off these lights. So any help, as I said, would be very much appreciated.

Hi @trebor-58,

Thanks for writing back. Well, let's try these steps and see if that helps. If not I suggest you contact phone support 🙂

To turn off the media light on an HP DV6000 laptop, you can try the following methods:

1. Use the Keyboard Shortcut

Most HP laptops have a specific key or combination of keys to control the media lights.

Locate the Media Control Key:

  • Look for a key on the keyboard that has a light icon or is labeled with "Media," "Play," "Pause," or a similar symbol.
  • It may be one of the function keys (F1-F12) or a dedicated media key.

Press the Key:

  • Press the corresponding key directly or hold down the Fn key while pressing the media key to toggle the light off.

2. Check HP Software

If your laptop has HP software installed (like HP Support Assistant), you may have the option to control the media lights through that software.

  1. Open HP Support Assistant:
    • Search for "HP Support Assistant" in the Start menu and open it.
  2. Navigate to Settings:
    • Look for settings related to device customization or media controls.
    • Adjust the settings to turn off the media light if an option is available.

3. Power Settings

Adjusting your power settings might also affect the behavior of the media lights.

  1. Open Power Options:
    • Right-click on the battery icon in the taskbar and select Power Options.
  2. Change Plan Settings:
    • Select Change plan settings for your current power plan.
  3. Adjust Advanced Settings:
    • Click on Change advanced power settings and look for options related to keyboard or multimedia settings.
    • Make any adjustments as necessary.

4. Turn Off via BIOS (If Applicable)

If the media light continues to stay on and you cannot control it through software or shortcuts, you might check BIOS settings.

  1. Access BIOS:
    • Restart your laptop and press the appropriate key (usually F10 or Esc) to enter the BIOS setup.
  2. Look for LED Control:
    • Navigate through the BIOS menus to find settings related to LED or media control.
    • If available, turn off any related settings.
  3. Save Changes and Exit:
    • Save any changes made and exit the BIOS.

If none of the above methods work, consult the user manual for your specific HP DV6000 model for any additional methods related to controlling media lights. Or phone support.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
