Hi @GeneR47,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're experiencing with your HP laptop shutting down or the screen going blank after a short period of inactivity may be related to power settings or a feature known as "HP Presence Aware" or "Dynamic Lock." Here's how you can adjust these settings to prevent this from happening.
Adjust Power and Sleep Settings
Modify Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Change the settings for Screen and Sleep to a longer duration or set them to Never if you prefer the screen to remain on indefinitely.
Customize Power Plan:
- Type "Control Panel" in the Windows search bar and open it.
- Navigate to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select your active power plan and click on Change plan settings.
- Adjust the settings under Turn off the display and Put the computer to sleep to your preference.
Disable Dynamic Lock (Windows 10):
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Scroll down to Dynamic lock and ensure it's set to Off. This feature uses a paired device to automatically lock your PC when you're away.
Adjust Presence Aware Settings
If your HP laptop has Presence Aware capabilities, which might cause the screen to turn off when it doesn't detect motion, you can adjust or disable these settings:
- HP Presence Aware Settings (If Applicable):
- Open the HP Support Assistant, or type "HP Presence" in the Windows search bar to see if there's an application or settings panel for it.
- Look for settings related to motion detection or presence and adjust them to suit your needs.
- You may have an option to disable or configure the sensitivity and timeout period for presence detection.
By following these steps, you should be able to prevent your screen from going blank or your laptop from shutting down unexpectedly due to inactivity.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
