ProBook 4310s, Windows 7

When scrolling, a small scrollbox appears randomly and takes me way off the page I am scrolling on.  This happens when I use the little square plate to scroll.  This is the single most irritating 'feature' of any computer I have ever owned or used, and I should like to be able to turn it off.  How do I do that please?

Hi Taxlady:

I found the solution myself.  You have to start HP Support Assistant and choose Problem Solving (the second of the four options, my copy is in Swedish so it may not be called Problem Solving but something similar).  Then choose Peripherals, the one in the middle on the bottom row, and next Configuration for Mouse and <whatever that flat plate is called in English>.  Here you will get a new window, with a five item menu on the left.  These items will be something like:

Overview, Scrolling, Point, Buttons and something else I don't even understand the Swedish for!

Choose Scrolling, and under there you have one-finger scrolling.  Deactivate horizontal and vertical scrolling, and your problems are over.

Has anyone found a solution yet? No questions thus far about this issue seem to have a workable solution.

Think how easily something can go wrong in the computer world. I've just reinstalled a laptop, and the window with the five-item menu on the left doesn't show. Instead I get a standard Windows mouse window. I've tried re-installing the Synaptics touchpad software without success.

Anybody any idea how to get back there? I really NEED to turn off this crappy bug.

I have tried it many times to reinstall the  Synaptics Pointing Device driver but no luck.  My default settings has these single finger Horizontal and Vertical scroll disabled. I got it worked sometime back randmly when i just tried to enable and disable it and then restore ( somthing randomly like this) and it had worked. The only way i know is a hard way- restart system. This is totally bugging. I never had this issue with any other machines i have used. Seems like this is a prolonged issue with the HP drivers.
