Hi @Misti6,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "black screen of death" on a computer can be caused by various issues, and fixing it may require some troubleshooting. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue on your HP Pavilion gaming laptop.
Check for Power Issues:
- Ensure that the laptop is properly charged or connected to a power source. Sometimes, a drained battery can result in a black screen.
Disconnect External Devices:
- Disconnect all external devices (such as USB drives, external monitors, and accessories) from your laptop. Sometimes, a faulty external device can cause this problem.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the laptop's battery (if possible).
- Hold the power button down for about 15 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the battery (if removed) and plug in the power source.
- Turn on the laptop.
Check the Display Brightness:
- It might sound simple, but make sure the display brightness is turned up. Sometimes, the screen can appear black if the brightness is set to the lowest level.
Boot into Safe Mode:
- If your laptop has a black screen during startup, try booting into Safe Mode. To do this, repeatedly press the "F8" key or another key specified for your laptop during startup. In Safe Mode, you can troubleshoot software-related issues.
Connect to an External Monitor:
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using the appropriate cable. If the external display works, it could indicate a problem with the laptop's built-in display.
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can sometimes cause display issues. Go to the HP website and download the latest graphics drivers for your laptop model.
Perform a System Restore:
- If you suspect a recent software change or update caused the issue, you can try performing a System Restore to revert your laptop to a previous working state.
Use Windows Recovery Options:
- If you're using Windows, you can access advanced startup options by repeatedly pressing the "F8" key or using a Windows installation or recovery media. From there, you can try options like "Startup Repair" or "System Restore."
Check for Hardware Issues:
- If none of the above steps work, the issue might be hardware-related. It could be a faulty GPU, RAM, or motherboard.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
