I've tried the power and display settings but apparently I'm doing something wrong. The laptop doesn't start up when I hit a key on my keyboard like my other laptop does! Thanks - kwg

I personally don't think you can do this on new Win10 PCs as they have changed the sleep/hibernation process from the older PCs.
In Win10, the default is for Fast Startup (NOT Fast Boot -- as that is different) to be ENABLED. This is a new hybrid form of sleep/hibernation and it looks like it won't respond to pressing the keys on the keyboard.
You can try temporarily disabling Fast Startup to see if that helps.
There are two ways to disable FastStartup in Win10: (1) through the Control Panel, and (2) through an elevated command prompt.
Control Panel - Open Control Panel --> Power Options.
Select "Choose what the power buttons do"
Select "Change settings that are currently unavailable"
At the bottom of the Window, under Shutdown settings, uncheck the box regarding fast startup
Elevated command prompt - run the following command:
REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power" /V HiberbootEnabled /T REG_dWORD /D 0 /F
In both cases, reboot Windows.
NOW, FastStartup is disabled.
