how do a connect my HP laptop to a projector

I don't know why but MANY Projectors do not work as an external monitor. I worked at a place when moving from one floor to another floor with my notebook projector did not work at all. We finally forced all departments MUST use same projector and problem solved.

 

What is your machine and what is your projector ?
