HP Pavilion dv6000
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Hello, I have an issue with my HP pavilion dv6000. The issue is that I am trying to boot from a DVD on a external Dell DVD drive. The reason why I have to use an external DVD drive, is because my built in DVD drive in the computer went out after sixteen years or fifteen years of owning this computer. When I press F10 to go to the boot selection it does not show the external DVD drive, while the external drive is plugged into the main USB port. Can somebody help me with this issue, thank you.

I guess your only option would be to toss $10 at the problem and replace the DVD drive.

Hi:

I do not believe that model series supports booting from a USB port, but you should be pressing the F9 key to get the boot options menu, not the F10 key.

I don't know that your notebook is worth putting any money into, but they do sell used but tested and working DVD drives for the dv6000 model series on eBay.

There is no F9 key on this computer. When booting up.

You're right.

Your model uses the ESC key to get the boot options menu.

Looking at the service manual, it does indicate that there is an option to boot from a USB flash drive (diskette on key), USB floppy drive and a USB hard drive, but I don't see an option listed to boot from a USB DVD drive--page 2-7.

Since there is no option, I guess this computer does not have the compatibility to run off of a external dvd drive.

Will a sd card work too?

Your notebook does not support booting from a SD card.
