Welcome to the HP Community --
Beyond any mechanical requirements or limitations, the printer is not aware of what it is printing.
- Load the paper into the printer tray
- Alert the printer to the paper size and type (Tray and Paper)
- Configure the job.
The first two are easy --
- Most printers adhere to standard "load paper" practices for the model type - See the printer's user manual for details.
- Printers either support modifying / checking the Paper Size & Type on the printer control panel and / or using the Embedded Web Server (EWS) - and Example of the "how to check / adjust paper size & type" is provided later in this message.
The last one is "easy as pie" in Windows and possibly nearly that easy in "Other" Operating Systems.
For example, if the labels you are printing are of a standard size (A4 or Letter) and the label paper is "near to regular" paper, you might get away with leaving the paper type as "Plain Paper".
In general, load your paper into the printer tray print side down, top toward the back of the printer. If you are unsure, mark a piece of regular paper with hand written words to mark "Print side" and "top" -- Load and test printing your label template on the plain paper.
The Example (Windows) illustrates various paper settings.
