Today I'd been looking for a way to check AC adapter on my laptop, however the hardware diagnostics UEFI tool I have is quite outdated (at this point i forgot exact version, but it was something like 5.4.*.*) and didn't have such option (it allows to check battery only). I found that I can download latest version ( of this tool from here. Long story short - I downloaded it and installed the software, it looked quite straightforward like a standard Windows-software installation (despite it's a different beast of course) and it says that it should support all laptops released after 2009 (my dv7 is of 2011) so i thought it should be safe to install it. However when I reload my machine and hit F2 key, it turned out that my UEFI diagnostics tool is no longer working (it takes me to default bios check instead, without any UI).
During installation process it asked me if i want to install this tool on USB drive or a separate partition and i chose partition, since i used to work with it this way and actually don't have a spare USB drive. I also could see that some files were updated under HP_TOOLS partition and i came to a conclusion that this UEFI is entirely stored there.. so i tried to just remove all files from this disk (essentially formatted it) and perform clean install. Unfortunately with the exactly same results.

So what i'm trying to do now is to make it working back. I'd like to emphasize that i'm not looking for a way to use this UEFI tool any other way but via UEFI boot, and my question is completely focused on how to make it work again. If i can make UEFI work somehow it's also acceptable option but i think my main way to go is to restore original tools.

@The_Norman If the UEFI BIOS is not working since the update, I suggest you Click here to perform a hard reset on your device

If the issue persists, after the above steps, try the below:

  1. Turn off the notebook.

  2. Plug the notebook into a power source using the power adapter.

  3. With the notebook off, press and hold the Windows logo key  and the B key at the same time.


    On some notebook models, it might be necessary to press and hold the Windows logo key  and the V key.

  4. While pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button on the computer for 2 to 3 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows logo key  and the B or V key until the HP BIOS update screen displays or you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps).

    The HP BIOS Update screen displays, and the BIOS update begins automatically. This might take several minutes, and you might hear additional beeping sounds.

    • If the HP BIOS Update screen does not display, repeat the previous steps. If the issue persists after repeating the steps, skip to the next step to Download a replacement BIOS file.

    • If the Power light turns off, the notebook has turned off because the Power button was held too long. Repeat the previous steps, making sure to hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds only.


(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)
